This may be a stupid question, or I haven't looked hard enough yet, but what exactly are you meant to write in the report box? Do you just say the rule they broke, or are you meant to say where the thread is, etc?

Your suppose to say like what rule they've broke and why you've reported. Also if the thread/post your reporting belongs in a different section it helps if you link to where it should be.

You are meant to say what rule violation is in place. And if it in wrong forum then link to the proper one. If it is supposed to be in a Simple Questions topic then either link to that topic or mention that it should be in that said topic. If somebody is flaming then just put "Post intent was to flame other user"or something like that.

Either way, imma explain the reports system sort of. Not really the technical side since I think that was explained somewhere...? I'll just brush over the basics anyway before I go into the content-side.

When you report, there's three categories: open, pending, closed. open ones we haven't got to yet, pending are ones we are taking time to think about, and closed ones are as it says, closed. aka they won't be seen, and you'll need to click another link in modcp to find them.

Now, back to the story! Some people seem to be afraid of reporting posts because they could get in trouble - nope, we'll just shut the report and think nothing more of it. If you don't report because "something is too obvious", well, let's just say unless it isn't porn posted in a new thread then there's a pretty good chance the moderator involved may have missed it. Report it either way, won't harm anyone.

Though, we do appreciate reports that aren't complely incorrect. For example, links. We love links. They make our lives easier. When you report, if you link to a thread that thread or post might belong in we will pay more attention to that report than one that says "doesn't belong here" <-- if you know it doesn't belong here, why not specify why it doesn't belong? have a guess at where it belongs, it doesn't matter if you're wrong, because maybe the moderator in question hasn't thought of that location and as a result takes some time to think about it, and would set it to pending. Same thing can go for when you say something doesn't need to be a thread - why do you think it doesn't need to be a thread? a little more detail would go a long way :) However! Writing a paragraph about why something belongs in the quick trade thread generally isn't needed, since a link and "belongs in" would be fine.

Also in general, I know there's a few of us that definitely don't really enjoy signature reports. If you go around reporting 10 signatures in one forum, generally the reaction would be an annoyed one. Once is fine in a while tbh, but reporting over and over for such minor things such as being 5 pixels over the limit really isn't worth either of the people's time.

Kay now to cover something else, imagine you're reporting in a section without a designated moderator. Who sees it? Everybody basically, all we need to do is click the link to all reports and we literally see... every report. We can comment on everyone else's reports and offer our opinions, or back up a claim in a report, it depends. Generally though, a higher staff will take over reports for that section, or it could alternate between a few. For example, like you've been seeing with the clubs sections, where those people in particular cover the reports and everyone else leaves the reports for them most of the time.

In other words, next time you report something, try to put yourself in our shoes, it'll help!

Above is a nicely rounded up guide from Forever as to what to put in reports. If you read over that, I am sure it will answer all of your questions!

Thanks for the answers guys :D also, am I meant to link the where the reported post is? Or do they already know?
If you don't feel like reading all of the Blog entry, in short the report links back to the Moderator Control Panel. So no need to link the topic or post you are reporting.
