roam or Pokéballs

Oh I would feel terrible putting them into a Pokéball. I'd feel terrible catching them in a Pokéball. I imagine I'd befriend Pokémon and ask them if they wanted to join me and live with me or adventure with me or whatever instead of throwing a Pokéball at it, and hurting it (the reaction Oshawott had to the Pokéball was highly cute, but goodness...), so I'd just let it roam around with me and hang out out of it's ball.
