I know there are ways to do this, with the arrival of my new iMac I am really wanting to do this without buying Windows, I no there are ways, but I am having trouble finding the answer, I just need a simple something so I can run Rom hacking tools on my new intel iMac.

    thanks for all the help,

Well the simplest way would to buy Crossover, which is a native Mac way to run Windows applications right on your Mac. Crossover technically isn't an emulator, but it does run native Windows Programs, It also costs some money, but its worth it in the long run.

You could also Dual boot Windows on Mac using something called Boot Camp. Basically it allows you to install Windows ( XP and Vista only I think ) right from an Install CD right next to your OSX. It free except for the fact that you'll need a Vista or XP install disc lying around somewhere.

Congrats on the new Mac by the way ;)

Thanks, is there any like free version of this? I tried Darwine but it sucked and had too many bugs, i do not want to pirate though, I want to just find a freeware app to do this!

btw, I do not have Windows as of now, that is why i am doing this

Why not buy a windows PC.

I had a mac which wouldnt turn on. I had to throw it out the window and this was on the day I got it. Macs suck.

But really get boot camp. It may cost loads but it might be worth it.

There really isn't a freeware app which allows you to run Windows on Mac besides Darwin. I guess you could try VMware, but you'll have to find a working Windows *build to use it

*The actual name escapes me at the moment...

Yes, but I do not want to buy anything, and I will be getting Windows later, I love my iMac and will never sell it. I just want to run some simple Windows apps in Mac without paying

    isn't there that bootcamp thing?
Already mentioned that Bud, its just that you still you need a Windows Install disc to use it.

I mentioned it before your post was edited

also it's easy to get your hands on the XP Pro student edition disc since they're installed on lots of computers the key never goes bad

Is there any optimized versions of Darwine supported for Intel Macs running Leopard?

As far as I know, Darwine isn't even updated anymore, so no.

You really only have 3 options besides using an emulator, Bootcamp, Crossover, and VMware.

All will require you buying a Vista/XP install disc.

Alright, thanks, I will try my best to get a hold of a windows disc

Regular Windows XP Home Edition is about $200.00 at Walmart, but you can probably get it alot cheaper from Ebay.
    ( of course... )

but getting it off ebay is a stupid idea, you won't know if it's legit or not, plus the key could be blacklisted as well
Eh, its either that or paying $200.
Just trying to show him all the options he has.

Go to WalMart. I am still amazed that they still sell it but with only like 1 copy in each store so grab it while you can. It will be worth it if you can get it. Also if you have an older Windows computer that ran XP. Look through the discs that it came with. Mine came with a backup copy of XP and I used it loads of times.

Actually, it's called Darwine and yes, it's still being updated and has been proven to be compatible with some major games out there.

Just search on Google for "Darwine 1" and you'll almost definitely find a source. Version 1 was just released as a beta about two months ago.

Of course, depending on your type of software, it may not work as expected. But hey, it's free, and works with most "simple" Windows applications out there. As it's already been mentioned before, there is no need for a Windows install CD to run Darwine.

Also, Apple Inc, it's illegal go use the same Windows install CD on different machines, so if I were you, I'd keep my mouth shut.

Its not like the FBI is going to burst through your Window and take your computer. As long as you bought it I doubt anyone is going to say anything about you installing it something else you own...

I will just wait to buy it for now, I heard you are making mac hacking tools though.

I could care less about whether or not Apple Inc gets both himself and his house owned.

It's just that it's kind of against the rules to endorse illegal activities.

Also hockeypanda, thanks for completely ignoring my post. Of course, I'm not going to force you to NOT dish out $200 for something that you can do for free, and legally.
