'Selling' of Pokemon in the Anime... (possible Spoilers)

One thing I had noticed when I was reviewing Pokemon episodes on another webpage was that it was always seen as 'terrible' to sell Pokemon or Pokemon eggs. Of course, while I understand that the show/game tries to portray them as unique, and equal to humans, how is it that it's wrong to make profit off of a Pokemon, but no one seems upset with using Pokemon Eggs as prizes in certain contests/events?

An example of this would be an episode where a traveling sales man tried to sell off Magicarp for money, but got thoroughly chewed out by Tracey and Prof. Oak, saying it was wrong to sell a Pokemon for money. But in the same series, Ash wins a Phanpy egg as a contest prize for some cycling event.

Even in the D/P season, Brock wins a Happiny egg.

Hasn't the thought that using a Pokemon egg as a prize in certain events is on the same line as selling a Pokemon itself? Or am I really just looking too deep into it?

Very unique observation. But... you are right.

I mean Brock, probably being a pokemon breeder, would start selling them because he would have too many.

Yeah, so I wonder how the Anime can really avoid that topic, when it has been made obvious that anyone with a good heart and mind would never 'sell' or 'buy' a Pokemon for profit... but have no quarrels in giving away free Eggs to someone who happened to cycle their way into victory or whatnot.

It's like prostitution; giving it away for free is totally fine, but the minute you ask for payment, you're 'morally evil' or something like that.

Its very true that it just depends on the morals of the person. I personally wouldn't see a problem with selling it, as long as you know its a good home for the Pokemon and that your selling it for a good reason. It could easily develop into an argument about the morales of Pokemon trading, but thats just stupid

I mean how could being Pokemon Breeder be a viable career if you don't sell Pokemon for profit. I mean lets say I have an award/ribbon winning Rapidash. I don't think it would be much less morally wrong to sell that Rapidash's offspring than it would be to selling a Triple Crown winning horses.

I think you must remember that we have many extremes and maybe Tracy & Prof. Oak are just the Pokemon equivalent of crazy hippie tree huggers. Not to mock vegetarians as I know several but some vegans refuse to drink milk 'cause it comes from cows. In the Pokemon world they have no problems selling Moomoo Milk so maybe people like Oak and Tracy are just a VERY vocal minority?

Don't forget the Team Rocket organization as a whole, for their main shtick is the selling and re-distribution of Pokemon. One curiosity is that the anime has never covered the Game Corner as you pay for Pokemon, essentially. But, you're giving the rare Pokemon a good home, so isn't Team Rocket performing a public service of sorts?

Of course, maybe that's why we're getting the recent criminal orgs, who would rather remold the world, for that's easy to digest without any afterthought. Or why they crammed J/J/M down our throats. My theory being, it's easier to go with that, than to actually think on the Rocket org and what they're doing. Notice the cruelty streak we see in the Elites and up, especially when compared to J/J/M and their silly Boss Fantasies.

That, and the series would rather breeze through the canon, anyway, than stop and probe these gray areas. Got to crank out a product, right? It's been a long way since we had Mewtwo and the issues of genetic engineering.

I like this topic, so keep it up.

Hmm. I noticed this, but didn't really care for bringing it up. I don't see much point in looking deeper into it, although it is somewhat interesting; in RBY, the Magikarp guy would sell you Pokemon and that was okay, but since Team Rocket was giving the Game Corner it's prizes it was wrong. What if the Magikarp guy was providing prizes [hopefully better than Magikarp]? Would that be okay?
