Believe it or not, I have no complaints on this episode at all! Amazing, no? Okay!
Seriously, though, this is the first time Dawn actually got on my nerves. Don't get me wrong; this is a good thing. For starters, she acts rather realistically here in her need to primp and even goes to the extra mile of actually criticizing Ash and Brock for their...unique hairstyles. In addition, she shows a nice bit of gumption by vowing a mini competition with Ash over Buneary.
Say what you will of Dawn, but at least she's acting like her age, instead of just complying as May or mid Johto Misty would have done. I'm not saying I care for it personally, but it's a good step in the right direction, character-wise.
And like the Joy exposition in the Nando episode, we get the Jenny version. Along with Jenny apparently telling the kids to look both ways...in a desolate forest.... Okay.... And she even returns in the final act, proving it isn't just a gratuitous cameo! Hehe.
As for the Rockets, can't complain on that front. Their mecha design has a good 60's Sci-fi design feel to it (I'm tracking down on the design, so I'll get back to you), and not too shabby arguments/banter. Combined that with their deceiving the rat (it's been a while) and the fact they didn't blast off, they are actually handled righteously, which isn't something I say much.
Although, I do have to wonder, where specifically the Rockets manage to snatch this so-called "technology" as we're nowhere near a major city yet. Oh, well, silly detail.
And that Buneary is such a flirt (and what a nice change of pace, to boot). What a fitting compliment to Dawn's Lolita outfit. Hehe. Well done, producers, keep it up.
