4th Gen shiny hippowdon?

    how come the hippowdon in the elite four is gray and black and the ones that you catch in nature are beige and black?
     
    It changes color considerably based on Gender. It's not Shiny. Males are beige and black while Females are Grey and black. That mistake often occurs between them.
     
    Male Hippowdon:

    It's quite a stark recolour for just a simple change in gender. A lot of confusion arises around this.
     
    Lots of Pkmn have male female differences, they're just harder to spot. Hippowdon is probably the most obvious of the Pkmn that look different with gender.
     
    You can also view gender differance on your Pokedex. Please note that whenever a pokemon has blue sparkle around them, they are shiny. In this case Hippowdon is not shiny.

    The female ones are a different color than the males. the elite 4 one is a female
