Aha! I knew there was a word spelled centre. Sometimes thought it was something I'd just imagined.

A lot of common words that end with "er" in American English is "re" in European English. Was changed around to "er" because, and I quote every English Teacher I've ever had. "That doesn't make sense when you pronounce the word and is kinda dumb." Which would be the reason American's removed the "u" from color.
