Warnings: Spoilers for the ending of the Pokémon Black/White games. The setting is two years after.
Fifteen, and N was just dreaming.
Crowned as king and leader of a group, the members cheering over the belief of Pokémon and humans needing to be in separate worlds…At the highest tower, he made his presence known to Zekrom, one of the great dragons he heard so much about… After he summoned his castle from the earth, he challenged the male trainer that he kept battling with recently and witnessed the other great dragon, Reshiram, chose him. They battled; he won and N lost… Ghetsis revealed that Team Plasma and his ideals were all a trick for him to rule the region, but luckily he was taken away, justice be served… The final farewell to the worthy opponent who showed him that Pokémon and humans could co-exist with one another…
"Hilbert! You said you have a dream… That dream… Make it come true! Make your wonderful dream a reality, and it will become your truth, Hilbert! If anyone can, it's you! Well, then… Farewell!"
No, none of those events were a dream. All of that happened almost two years ago, and N was not happy about that. He was now back in reality, at Pinwheel Forest. N took one good look around his surroundings and remembered catching several Pokémon that stayed here, but he had then let them go immediately after using them for battle.
The young man wasn't sure why he went back to Pinwheel Forest, or Unova for that manner. Many of the places in this region left him with not-so-great memories.
N was snapped away from his thoughts when he heard footsteps. He turned around and saw a familiar male face looking at him in astonishment.
"N, is that you?"
The green haired trainer's face mirrored the other person's expression. "Hilbert?"
"Well, this is a surprise!" Hilbert commented, beaming. "What brings you back here in the Unova region?"
Smiling sadly, N said, "I'm unable to find a good reason for that question myself."
Hilbert stared at N blankly, but then shrugged. "I guess there are times we don't have a reason why we come back to someplace. I'm here back in Unova to visit some people."
"I see." N stopped to look down at the ground and a thought occurred to him. "Were you able to go against Alder after I said my farewell to you?"
"I was able to a week after, but I lost." A smile pulled over Hilbert's face. "Boy, he isn't Champion for nothing, I tell you!"
N frowned upon hearing that. "How sad. I'm sorry things didn't turn out the best for you."
"You don't have to," Hilbert said with a laugh. "I'm not a good enough trainer yet to beat him."
Mouth slightly open, N stared at Hilbert in shock. From the several battles he had with him, he was a very skillful trainer. N guessed Hilbert didn't realize that yet.
"Well, I think you still have potential in becoming one," N said. "I'm sure you'll beat him one day."
That made Hilbert's smile become wider. "Thanks. That means a lot coming from you." He paused for a moment, then said, "Speaking of Alder, I think you might find this interesting. One of the Pokémon he used during our battle was a Vanilluxe and I couldn't help but be reminded that you had one too."
N didn't look surprised. "I already knew he had one as I defeated him before you came to battle me. Was his Vanilluxe not easy to go against when you were battling it?"
"No, it wasn't. Despite me having my Emboar, that Pokémon was tough to beat. I should have expected that as Alder's dealt with plenty of fire types before."
For a moment N wondered what would happen if his Vanilluxe were to battle against Alder's. Most likely it would be Alder's Vanilluxe having the upper hand. He wanted to have another battle with the Champion, this time a friendly one.
"I assume his is much stronger than mine, then."
"I had a hard time battling both of your guys' Vanilluxe, but his is slightly better." Realizing what he just said, Hilbert rubbed the back of his neck and let out an embarrassed laugh. "Sorry about that."
"No hard feelings," N said before shaking his head. "He is the Champion, after all."
Silence fell between them. N gazed at Hilbert while he had his eyes on the sunset sky. He wasn't sure what sort of thoughts or emotions the trainer had now, but he could tell there was a lot going on in his mind.
"Is something the matter, Hilbert?"
"I was just thinking. I want us to catch up and talk about what we have done after all this time, so why don't we have a slumber party here tonight?"
A puzzled look crossed N's face. He knew what the words "slumber" and "party" meant, but never in his whole life had he heard them being put together.
"A slumber party? What's that?"
Hilbert blinked twice and quirked an eyebrow at him. "You don't know what a slumber party is?"
N shook his head. There was no need to say anything more.
"Well, it's when some friends come to someone's place overnight and they do activities together."
N's expression softened, which changed to one of peaked interest. He wanted to know more about this "slumber party".
"Activities, you say. Like what?"
"All kinds. Watching TV, playing games, telling each other stories. Bianca, Cheren, and I used to do those all the time before we went on our Pokémon journeys."
When N heard the names Bianca and Cheren, their faces flashed in his mind for a second. Yes, he remembered those two well. He wanted to ask how Bianca and Cheren were, but decided against that.
"Correct me if I'm wrong, but we'll have a slumber party here, in the forest?" N asked, making sure.
"Well, technically we're going to camp out, but I like to call it something else."
Once again, N found himself confused. Camp out? That was another expression he had never heard. Hilbert stared at him. From the look on Hilbert's face, N could tell he figured that out.
"You never heard of camping either?"
"Never," N replied.
"Hm…how should I word it easier? It's when you stayed in a particular area, like a forest, for a while and sleep outside during the night. Sometimes people would camp out for days. Since you're a trainer like me, I'm sure you did that a lot of times."
This time N caught on fast over what Hilbert told him, but frowned. He reflected over how during his journey he never truly stayed at one place for long, as the Shadow Triad always followed and tended to him.
"I always went and stayed at a Pokémon Center, I truly never went camping."
"Well then, how about we make this both your first slumber party and camp out?" Hilbert suggested.
N had never thought of it that way. Yes, he could experience those two activities tonight. His expression then softened.
"That sounds actually fun. All right then, let's have a slumber party here!"
"Great!" Hilbert said with a grin. "You get the fire wood and I'll ready the sleeping bags."
N nodded and set off to find some firewood while Hilbert set up the sleeping bags. This shall be an interesting night, the young man thought to himself.
+++
Night fell at Pinwheel Forest and several hours passed by since N and Hilbert started their slumber party, which went off to a good start. The two conversed over what happened during the two year gap. Hilbert was the one that did most of the talking, which N didn't mind. He actually enjoyed it so far.
Hilbert first told N he came back home to find an international police officer named Looker who asked him to find the Six Sages, which he agreed to do. It took him a while, but he was able to find all seven of them and they were taken away to jail; N was satisfied of that. After that was done, Hilbert then headed off to Johto as that was where one of his friends, Hilda, went to. N was able to imagine himself being in Johto as Hilbert described to him in detail the Pokémon battles he participated in and the myths he heard from different people.
"So you battled against Johto's Elite Four after you won your eight badges?" N asked as Hilbert begun talking about going against the Elite Four.
"Yep. They were surprised over my Unova Pokémon, but still managed to find a way to have their Pokémon battle against them."
N's eyes flickered with mild interest. He wondered for a second how he would fare against them. It might be a chance he would battle one of those elites someday.
"I see. From what you told me so far, the Pokémon from Johto are tough."
"They are," Hilbert said and then laughed. "There are many Pokémon I've never seen before, so it was cool battling and catching them. Johto's myths about their legendary Pokémon are quite awesome too."
"Indeed, the stories are fascinating." N paused for a second to smile. "Perhaps I should travel to Johto, then."
"You totally should. Trust me N, you'll love it. Oh, there's something I want to show you."
As Hilbert was getting something form his pocket, N watched him closely. It wasn't long until Hilbert took out a small television set and turned it on.
"Hello and welcome to Tech TV. Today, we'll be learning about the concept of double battles."
"What is this?" N asked in amazement.
"It's a Techy TV, which has an advice program for trainers." Hilbert turned off the Techy TV and put it back in his bag. "It's very popular at Kanto, but a lot are found in Johto recently too. I don't need it since I already know a few things about battling, so I'm thinking of giving it to one of my friends."
"That is very of you to do that. I'm sure your friend will appreciate it."
Both boys turned quiet, Hilbert gazing into the fire with an expression N couldn't pinpoint. N wished he was good at figuring out emotions. He was getting better at it, but still had a lot to learn.
"After I found the remaining six Sages, Looker told me he spotted you with Zekrom," Hilbert said, breaking the silence. "I guess you have been traveling the past year?"
N flinched. He admitted, he hadn't thought about if he would be caught with the dragon. It was most likely there had been others that saw him and he wasn't aware of that.
"Yes. I went to different regions to learn more about the world and also to find out what I believe in."
"Just as I thought," Hilbert said, a tiny smirk shown from the corners of his mouth. "You still have Zekrom, though?"
Grief struck N's features. This was their first meeting together after the incident from Unova's Pokemon League and already he asked him about Zekrom. He drew a shaky sigh.
"Zekrom is out of my hands now. A Pokémon deserves to be free if it so desired."
A satisfied smile appeared on Hilbert's lips. "Yeah. I had let Reshiram go too before heading to Johto." Changing the subject, Hilbert then said, "Anyways, which regions did you go to?"
N gasped, still reflecting over letting go of Zekrom. There were instances where N wondered if anything would be different if he and Hilbert weren't chosen by the dragons. He figured destiny was funny like that sometimes and Hilbert probably felt the same way. It took a while for him to gather back his thoughts.
"Oh, right," N said before making a sheepish laugh. "I actually was flying around Unova for a while before going to Sinnoh and Hoenn."
"Sinnoh and Hoenn you say? Some of the trainers in Johto mentioned they were from either of those regions, so I'm aware of a few Pokémon they have."
"Like you, I was surprised over the new Pokémon I saw." A chuckle escaped from N. "It was also nice to actually interact with the people from those two regions. Many of them told me some wonderful stories relating to their legendary Pokémon."
"Really? Care to share some of them?"
A nervous expression crossed N's face. He wasn't much of a storyteller and felt afraid the delivery would be bad. But there seemed to be a hint of excitement in Hilbert's face when he asked that, so N offered the trainer a warm grin.
For the rest of the night, N told the different tales he heard of Hoenn and Sinnoh.
+++
As the sunrise began, N woke up with a loud yawn and came out of his sleeping bag. He then gazed at Hilbert who was still sleeping. A smile slipped onto N's face.
N had to admit that he had a lot of fun last night. His first time being in a slumber party went smoothly. Before the both of them went to sleep, Hilbert said to him that the legends from Hoenn and Sinnoh were great and he told them well—that made N glad he was able to do something right.
He lost his train of thought when he heard a groan. N jerked his head and saw Hilbert opening his eyes.
"Good morning," N said in a content voice.
"Hey, N. You enjoyed the slumber party last night?"
"Yes, very much so," N responded, nodding, "and I want to thank you for it. This is the first time I've had fun like this."
"No problem. I'm glad to hear that." Hilbert's smile grew wider. He then said, "So, what will you be doing now?"
"I still haven't found myself yet, so I'll be doing that," N responded instantly. "Maybe I'll go to Johto next as that region sounds neat. How about you?"
Hilbert didn't say anything at first, but then he chuckled. "I want to travel Kanto next and then later Hoenn and Sinnoh."
For a brief moment, neither of them exchanged words with one another. N had an idea what was going to happen next and didn't want to think about it. He frowned.
"I guess we part ways then."
"Yeah," Hilbert said with disappointment laced in his tone. "Good luck with trying to find yourself."
N made a slight nod. "And good luck with your travels."
The two trainers looked at one another with great respect and shook hands. Hilbert was the first one to walk, but after several steps he halted and turned his head to see N.
"Before I go, there's something I've been wondering for a while. What is your real name? I don't want to keep calling you N," Hilbert said with a low laugh.
The green haired male blinked. As far as he could remember, Ghetsis - he wouldn't acknowledge him as his "father" anymore - had always called him N. That man never told him what happened to his mother either, so there was no memory of her whispering his name.
"I…was never given a normal name," N responded, lowering his head in shame.
Hilbert's mouth showed a frown, but it disappeared instantly right after. "Well, I'll give you one, then! " He tapped his chin, pondering for a moment. "How about Nathan?"
N shot Hilbert a stunned expression. He hadn't expected him to think up a name, nonetheless give it to him. It seemed wrong to N for him to have one.
"Are you sure I deserve a name, even after all I did to you? To everyone in the Unova region?"
When Hilbert took a brief moment to think, N wondered if he was reconsidering over giving him a name. He would be fine if that was the case.
"Everyone deserves a name, no matter what they did in the past," Hilbert said simply. "What happened two years ago wasn't your fault. Also, I think Nathan suits you well."
N felt a weight lifted off his shoulders, which was new and strange to him. It was as if he was freed from these chains that had been dragging him for fifteen years.
"Nathan," he whispered, as if being blessed. "It's such a lovely name."
"Great! Well, take care then, Nathan! I hope to see you again one day. Maybe then we'll have another slumber party."
"I would like that very much."
After waving to him goodbye, Hilbert hummed a tune while marching away. N stood still, a satisfied look spreading across his features.
Nathan shall be my name from now on.
