Some of them are really... not that well planned.

in particular. I don't want to disable smilies because I like them, but sometimes I use :3, like when I put in a time. Can an admin just, like, add an extra 3 or two in there so it doesn't override something like 10/:/30pm?

I have smilies off but there is another one that should probably be looked at and changed to something else:

Now, normally this wouldn't be a problem but when there is a game called Pokemon XD it ends up becoming Pokemon XD (as in the smilie). Also D: got in the way of someone saying PMD: Explorer of Time & PMD: Gates of Infinity.

I'd go for things like , which is a common code format on many other websites.

Or maybe smart-recognition.

Like, :3 would become a smiley, but 10:30 (because it has no spaces around it and/or is surrounded by letters) would stay that way.
