Hi! I'm pretty new to this website and mainly made an account to have somewhere to discuss ROMHacks with others! I really love ROM Hacks, some ones I've played a bit are Rising Ruby, Renegade Platinum (I love Drayano's hacks, lol), and I also was playing around a bit with Sovereign of the Skies -- that last one specifically really charmed me. It's the closest to a fangame I've played, and I liked it a whole lot.

I've had my own concept for a Pokemon-like game that I'd love to try out as a ROMHack after learning a bit first -- again, I'm quite new to the scene and am wanting to learn how to go about that! After reading over the thread(s) introducing Pokemon Sweet, I was really impressed by the scope of the project! Mechanically, the Pokemon all seemed to be considerable as Fakemon, and the type matchup was unique! As someone with an idea for a Pokemon-like title, it got me to thinking --

    1. Have there been any ROMHacks that use a completely original dex for the whole game? Possibly even a completely original type system?
    2. Would it be possible to use a Pokemon game engine for a semi-original game the way ROMHacks do? Specifically, HeartGold/SoulSilver maybe?*
    3. At what point can you use the engine for a Pokemon game to make a new game and create your own assets and music and stuff that you can't get DMCA'd anymore? Is there a line?

*I say HG/SS because I'd likely want to have the follow mechanic, and that seems the easiest jumping off point.

Again, I'm quite new to all of this and really do not know how ROMHacks work, at least in the Development stage. So if I sound Foolish that's why ^^"

For an answer to Question 1, they do exist. One game I remember fondly playing for instance is Fakemon Firered, which has an entire Fakemon dex.

The line would be creating an all-new engine from scratch.
