Got him a ex trainer set and we have figured out the basic game with 30 cards each. I am just confused on where he goes from here.

I see all these booster sets but do they include some of the same basic cards he already has or the stage one or 2 versions of say pikachu, skitty, torchic?? like if he bought some diamond and pearl packs would he get any cards to build on the base set he has?

Is there any point to buying the older packs or shoul we just buy a bunch of diamond and pearl packs and go from there as the old stuff isnt used much anymore?

lastly saw a few ebay auctions where you can get all the energy cards some trainers and like 200 diff cards- of course no foils or holograms or whatever for like $15 and then he would at least have alot of cards- he is only 7 and wont be really collecting them just playing me and his friends for now.

So if he say had $30 to get a good start what would you sugest he do?

    Thanks for any help

The standard game actually has 60 cards. 30 cards is just to learn the game. Maybe buy a theme deck and see how that works.

Which set are the cards from? Boosters are assigned cards randomly in a factory. He might get them, he might not. Boosters are designed so that you have to buy a ton to get all the cards you want. I suggest buying one of those booster boxes from one of the sets, that way you may have enough cards to build a deck with.

Stuff made in 2006 and earlier isn't legal at official tournaments, but is still legal in unlimited play, which just means there are no restrictions on the cards you can use.

eBay stuff tends to be overpriced, but if you see some stuff you like, go ahead and buy it (it's your money, so ultimately, your choice, not mine), since unlimited play is what he is probably going to be doing, based on who he is playing with.

I would suggest buying a booster box from a hobby shop (since that is basically the only place you can find them), and a theme deck or two.

    Thanks for any help

    You are welcome, sir.

I would not recommend a booster box if you're just starting. Each box has 36 packs in it, and it's kind of overkill, especially since they're all from the one set. Buy a few packs from a few different sets to get a good mix of things.

Sets from Holon Phantoms on are legal to play at the moment, but I'd recommend buying Mysterious Treasures and newer - HP through Power Keepers will most likely be rotated out in September and aren't really great now we have the new DP cards and rules anyway, and Diamond & Pearl is a pretty crappy set. As the above poster said, a theme deck is a good way to start, then you can customise it.

Also, consider taking your son to a league - the league locator will help you find one close to you. You'll be able to meet other players and trade with them, they can help you with decks too - just make sure you don't get ripped off in any trades, some people are sharks. D: (If in doubt, ask a League Leader or Professor, who are required to follow the Spirit of the Game.)
