So I noticed this when I was playing through AS, and apparently I'm not the only one who noticed, because a reddit user uploaded these pictures to imgur. This room has to be Shelly's room, since I know a grunt mentioned she has a poke doll in her room. It seems like the date was Tanabata, as well.

I'm just wondering, why is this reference in the game when Team Aqua has nothing to do with Jirachi? Does something happen if you have a Jirachi in your party and talk to Archie or Shelly? I could test that, but I don't think anything happens.

I believe this was introduced to give some credence to Archie's characterization: He's a guy who truly believes what he's doing, flooding the world with Primal Kyogre's power, is what is best for Pokémon. He had a touching, meaningful relationship with Shelly and Jirachi and he wants to make the world acceptable for Pokémon, because maybe that's what it'd take to see Jirachi again.

In contrast, Maxie's room in the Team Magma Hideout, I have heard via the Pokémon subreddit, is barren, reaffirming he has no connection to Pokémon and is only interested in the welfare of humanity at all other cost.

I like the changes, because it really gives not only Archie a human side, but it enhances the character of both teams significantly. Now you're not just fighting well-meaning idiots, you're fighting either a bunch of high-functioning sociopaths working only for humanity's benefit--Team Magma--or a group of well-meaning, but desparate, empathic people working for Pokémon's benefit--Team Aqua. It shows Game Freak really put a lot of effort into making the best story they could for us.

I understand that Archie and Shelly (and probably Matt) were childhood friends, I'm just wondering why Jirachi? I find it weird that the writers would reference Archie meeting a legendary pokemon in the past and then never bring it up again.

So it's supposed to show the strength of Archie's wish for a better world? But still, Jirachi has never been involved in a game's story before, so it's still weird.

Maxie and Archie used to have almost the same personality. If you took the words "land" and "sea" out of their old dialogue I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I really like Team Aqua and Team Magma as characters know, especially Shelly and Tabitha.

Flooding the world is so good for Pokémon that you might kill all Fire, Rock and Ground-types. Archie is no better than Maxie.

Let's face it, only Water and other aquatic Pokémon can live in a flooded world. Archie doesn't care about all Pokémon, only his beloved Water Pokémon. Therefore, he doesn't care about the welfare of Pokémon at all, generally speaking. How is he better than Maxie? At least Maxie is pragmatic and honest about his goal.

They're equally bad. Archie appears nicer on the surface which just makes him two-faced, and Maxie is incredibly un-PC and is just plain nuts. They both get better, though.
