    While we all know that Starter Pokemon from Bulbasaur to Charmander stuff are rare pokemon, I wonder what kind of Pokemon do most trainers in the anime use usually.

    I do not think that all trainers have the privilege of having Professor with pokedexes.etc

    Didn't Ash fail to receive his starter Pokemon because he was late to Professor Oak's lab? I'm guessing it's some sort of first-come first-serve basis when it comes to the starter Pokemon available with Pokemon Professors. XD;

    Maybe small kids just start their adventures with whatever pets they've got at their house. James, for example ran away from his house with his Growlithe, with whom he was bonded pretty strongly. So, I think that the Pokemon which young trainers usually start with can be any of the Pokemon in the Pokemon world, ranging from Rattata to Kecleon and what not.

    Or another possibility might be that some elders catch Pokemon for kids and let them use those Pokemon. Maybe something like Norman in R/S/E did, asking the protagonist to help Wally
    catch a Ralts.

    Remember Old Man Swamp from "A Mudkip Mission?" Well he said that he raised Mudkips for the Pokémon league to give out as starter pokémon, if I remember correctly. So I guess it isn't just up to the professors, maybe something to do with the Pokémon League in the anime.

    I think most trainers would get their Pokemon from people who breed or something.

    Also Nurse joys are qualified to give out starter pokemon, remember in AV034 (having a Wailord of a time) The nurse joy had all three starter pokemon and was waiting for new trainer. So i think people like the Mudkip breeder not only provide pokemon for the professors i also think they give them to several nurses throughout the region.

    But that aside i think they can start with either the reliable family pokemon, or there parents would breed there pokemon and give them the offspring. They can go out with there parents and catch the first pokemon that catches there eye.
    Or it could be like that girl who wanted a Jigglypuff she sent her father to go and catch it.

    I think it all depends on location. if you're too far away from a lab you start your kid off with whatever is local (pidgey/rattatta/ect) or with a more trusted family pokemon. because as you can see not everyone has the luxury of an actual starter which I think is pretty unique & cool :D

    I might agree with you, Zombie.

    But I think most trainers should receive a proper starter from their Professor.
