"Steamboat Willies" Episode Discussion

I didn't watch, so I can't say much.

Since this finally addresses Pokemon gender, my question is, why spotlight this now? The series has gone out of its way not to acknowledge the issue since 99 with Johto. And still, there is AG's reboot for such an opportunity, yet they didn't take it. So, why wait 8 years to finally say, "this one is male, or female, or..."

I'm just confused. Heh.

However, Buneary's gender is only dub-confirmed. As far as I know, there has been no reference to Buneary's gender in the original, in all the currently broadcasted 57 episodes.

However, Aipom's gender got confirmed in both dub and original versions, which makes this a settled issue.

Dx wow, you've brought up a really good point. In the older epi's I always remember Ash referring to Pikachu as "It" as did Everyone else.

All of their Pokemon were "Its"

Now it's pretty much confirmed that Pikachu is in fact, male. But I still remember the heated debates going back and forth questioning Pikachu's gender.

Ash, still, in a sense doesn't put any more emphasis into rather if the Pokemon is a boy or a girl. He sort of, side-steps the subject. At least he tossed it aside when Dawn was commenting on the outfits. =\ That's what confuzzled me.

The fact is, it just doesn't really seem to matter on their genders anyways. It seems like it was only introduced for the contest area. (with the whole dress-up thing).

EXCEPT with Bayleef, I think they might have said "she" on one of the Johto eps. .-. can't remember...

That is strange. I mean we always assume that the pokemon was either a girl or a boy. I mean I always thought that Swellow was a girl. It just seemed like it was like all of Ash's flying pokemon except for Noctowl who was clearing boy-like.

Still maybe Ash always knew that Aipom was a girl. Still Aipom always seems like a guy by her playful nature. Still this is something that can lead to something else I guess. Teeheeheee

I've wanted to make this for months since it came out in Japan so I hope no one minds, here's where you discuss the antics of the twerps' Pokemon in Steamboat Willies!

I'll talk more later.

...Alright, you've gotten your filler. That's the end of it.

This one...was strange. I had flashbacks to those movie shorts that were added to the early movies, and I half-expected that Ash & co would never have their faces shown. But, instead, they decide to run off to the store. And, as predictable as ever, Team Rocket shows up just then.

Now, as for the whole gender point...I didn't ever notice them confirming Aipom being a girl. All that I saw was Aipom wearing a dress, but that can be just as easily written off as Aipom being an effeminate male. *is shot*

Seriously, I wouldn't put it past the writers. Between Croagunk somehow climbing up the side of the boat after hanging from a life preserver, Sudowoodo stalking Buizel, and Team Rocket's plain disturbing dance, Aipom getting in touch with its feminine side doesn't seem that unusual.

Episode comparison time! Today, Dogasu elaborates on the music issues once again, but he does give his reasons. And, apparently, the PokeMart reference was dub-only. Darn. Finally, the gender issue is addressed, including for a future spoiler. So, gender will be acknowledged, but not for a while.

I kinda like the Satoshi piloting swipe most, myself.
