Alright, first of all there was a discussion about HOTM for the Beginners Lounge. So this is just for ideas to improve on.

    Ideas:
    - A mini hack that plays up to about 3 or 4 gyms. Or roughly 3-4 hrs of gameplay.
    - Can work with a group or single.
    - Any storyline is acceptable.
    - Must be a new hack
    - Maybe, hackers can submit a hack they want to start on and must show work of it in a week to be accepted into the HOTM.

I had more but didn't write them down when I thought of them. So if its okay with the mods, we can use this to just pour more ideas to get a working HOTM for beginners if more submissions come.
    :(

Also, I was thinking of having a screenshot thread where hackers can post a screenshot of their hack like tiles or a new hp bar, sprites, etc so they can get feedback on them. For example, I have sprites and tiles that I inserted but am not sure if I should use so having a screenshot thread could make me get feedback from others. Just an idea.

I'm not sure if I understand this thread. Is this a thread to pool our ideas together? A place where anyone can come in and get some ideas for rom hacks, by other rom hackers?

Sorry for the confusion, this is where people can pour ideas together to make a HOTM style for Beginners

If I understand this correctly, you're saying you want a HotM contest for the Beginners Lounge so "beginners" can participate in some sort of contest, right?

    Spoiler:

There are a lot of bad ideas here.

First off, it sounds like you're mistaking the Beginners Lounge as a place where only new hackers that don't know very much go to. Beginners Lounge is a place where anybody can go and ask questions or give ideas that they have for a ROM hack, whether they are experienced or completely new. Keeping that in mind, creating a completely separate HotM just for the Beginners Lounge wouldn't make any sense whatsoever.

Secondly, HotM isn't a contest that only "extremely good-at-hacking people" can participate in. It's a contest that revolves around the approval rating/liking of the community as a whole to specific ROM hacks. So what I'm getting at here is that it doesn't matter if you think you suck at ROM hacking or not - if your hack is fun to play and interesting then you will be able to participate in the contest.

    - A mini hack that plays up to about 3 or 4 gyms. Or roughly 3-4 hrs of gameplay.
Another point: Even if a mod was to open a separate HotM for Beginners Lounge, why would anybody put effort into creating only half of a hack and then submit it? It would just be a waste of a potentially good, developing hack. The thing with HotM is that it's a passive hacking contest, i.e. people don't have to intentionally go out of there way to make/submit something for the contest.

Oh okay. Thanks for clarifying for me. Well i do have a few ideas for myself. If this is going to be a HOTM,I have a few ideas.
    - A screenshot showcase.
    -Maybe a patch with a town, a route, and a cave/dungeon.
    -Any storyline is accepted
    -Groups and Singles are accepted

I really need to think it over some more, but this would be cool for beginners.

Yes I know anybody can go here, even big hackers but I was thinking more for the beginners more. Experienced hackers can join to. And what I was aiming for with the 3-4 hrs of gameplay is it is beginners so why not do something small. Not to judge a whole game but a half game because it is the Beginners Lounge. You get what I'm saying? Of course the hacker can complete the game if they want to do. I just chose that half kinda hack idea as a starting point it doesn't have to be like that.

Yeah, I imagined it as sort of it being a showcase for mainly beginners, for hacks in the wood work, and if the general public likes it enough, its awarded. Not for a mini-hack contest, if you want to call it that. And if experienced hackers want to join in, theor welcome.

So if I'm correct, correct me if I'm wrong, its a contest for new hacks, just starting in development, along with mini-hacks.

It can be that. Like I stated in the first post, if you have an idea to make a HOTM Beginners Lounge work then post it. This is a general discussion about this topic. If it fails, it fails, its worth a show to see if this idea can work.

    You're just contradicting yourself there.

3-4 hours of gameplay is not 'something small'. O_o
It's taken me a month and a half to get 3-4 hours of gameplay on a ROM that I'm working on, and I consider that a really quick progression rate.

Not to judge a whole game but a half game because it is the Beginners Lounge.

Just because it's the Beginners Lounge? So why not just participate in the existing HotM?

Of course the hacker can complete the game if they want to do. I just chose that half kinda hack idea as a starting point it doesn't have to be like that.

If you would allow hacks to be submitted even if they're finished then your balance system would be completely messed up and just unfair for those who followed the suggested rules of only making half of a hack.

Again, if you have a hack that's good enough to be awarded, why not just submit it to the Progressing Hacks section instead of winning an alternative HotM contest in the Beginners Lounge, where the hack can't even be posted for showcasing?

Isn't this being a mini-hack contest the point of the thread?

Hacks "just starting in development" shouldn't be able to participate in a contest. There's no reason why anybody would make a contest for a couple of plain screenshots and a couple sentences explaining what they want their hack to be like.
If that was the case, you might as well make the contest titled, "Hack Idea of the Month".

    "Mini-hacks" belong in Slideshow Showcase.

Your implying that having a small thing for well, put together ideas is such a bad thing. And I think you are confusing my meaning of "starting in development". I didn't mean it as, "Hey, we just started a rom hack, let's submit it" No I meant in a sense that little progress has been made, maybe 1 gym or maybe even 2. All though, I do agree with you, when you say 3-4 gyms isn't small, you are arguing in a thread meant to pool our ideas for this type of contest. Not to critize, every, little idea, because it was taken in a rather literal sense. We can easily just regulary talk out our ideas, without bashing each other's, one by one. And key word in my response was imagine meaning that, I was stating what I thought it was, not what I was certain it was. You know what I mean? No disrespect, but your arguing over simple ideas, that need to be worked out, in an ideas thread.

The direction of this thread isn't exactly heading in a positive route so I'm just going to close it. Feel free to PM me any suggestions for competitions. Just a quick note; the only official competitions are HotM and HotY and we won't be running anything else.
