Super Effective! Or not...

Has anyone else had this happen? Basically, I land a super effective hit on an opponent's Pokemon, but...for some reason it's only super effective half of the time. This has happened to me approximately 3-4 times in my 145 hours of playing Diamond. What finally inspired me to create a thread on this is the fact my friend just got completely screwed over, thanks to this unforgiving occurance. My friend was using Probopass against someone's Togekiss in an online battle. Probopass landed a thunderbolt on the Togekiss (whom is is normal and flying), and...it wasn't super effective. (but took down a little less than half of it's health) The Togekiss used Safeguard. Now, this is weird...Probopass landed another thunderbolt on Togekiss, except this time it WAS super effective. (still didn't knock out the Togekiss, thanks to a "wish" used previously) My friend got somewhat pissed, used thunderbolt again...AND IT WASN'T SUPER EFFECTIVE?! We honestly have no idea why this happens. Any suggestions or reasons as to why this occurs? Is it a glitch of some sort?

Yeah, the same thing happened to me on PBR the other day! I was fighting someone's Togekiss, and when my Arcanine used Thunderfang it was only Super Effective I think 1 out of 5 times. It was really aggrivating, I ended up losing because of it.

Maybe its has to do with Togekiss's Serene Grace ability? Of course, really i dont know.

I thought it only increased the chances of status effects...though, you're definately thinking more outside of the box than I am. e_e; I really want to know the true meaning of this happening, even if it isn't Togekiss.

Hmmm.....I never really cared about weather attacks a super effective or not... (Well I do but I mean I don't look to see in the text because of my short attention span)

It might be because Roost (a fairly standard Kiss move) doesn't only heal, but also removes the Flying-type.

That might just be it, Seol. That might just be it...anybody who had this happen, did the Togekiss you battled know Roost?

Roost sounds like the only thing that can do it, you need to pay attention to your opponents moves when you are battling, I'd probably fall for the same thing to though if i didn't know that Roost got rid of the Flying-type temporarily

Super-effective reducing berries don't stop the attack being super-effective, they just halve the damage dealt. It still says the attacks are super-effective.

Re Roost, one important point here that's important to note is vs Skarmory, which sometimes uses Roost now. If it does, Earthquake becomes super-effective against it. Well worth knowing.

Actually, I learned about this while facing a Tyranitar with my Skarmory... I used Roost, he used Focus Punch on the same turn. It landed, and said, "It's super effective!" and I was just, "... wtf?" Luckily it still did crap, but it still really surprised me. BUT if you read the description of the move, it does say "the user lands its body and...", so it does make sense.

However, it is well worth knowing... Skarmory and Togekiss are the primary users of Roost in the competitive world, so if you send out someone slower than them, you can catch them with a surprise, or scare them into not healing. If I was using a Togekiss against that TTar (would have to be crazy to do that, but hear me out), Focus Punch would have been an OHKO, no doubt. Thank goodness for Skarm's awesome Defense.
