Supporter Name Change Event?

I remember reading somewhere that it wasn't about just doing less name changes, just that they had to stop them altogether and they literally couldn't bring them back. But I can't seem to pinpoint where I read that so. :(

The problem is that doing ONE single name change has the risk of complete and permanently damaging the server, so, even if we did them once a year and let only 5 people have them... those five name changes could kill the server. So it's not a matter of reducing the amount of changes to a minimum :x

I honestly don't believe ONE name change will kill the server. I honestly believe it's just so random a failure that the administration has gotten superstitious about it and stopped doing it instead of fully investigating why. Of course it may be simply a vB 3.x bug that we're stuck with. Who knows besides the admins anyway?

I know for a fact that name changes could be done during off-peak and crashes could be avoided...but that might involve closing the forum temporarily and such to do the changes...and what sane admin is active at 3am amirite?

Abegnation: The idea is to raise money to upgrade the server so that name changes don't derp the database.

It's not really that one name change WOULD hurt the server, but there's that risk. To do any amount of name changing the forums would have to be taken offline, and there are some setbacks with that too.

Also, there was an idea that was shot down earlier this year about allowing Supporters, or anyone for that matter, to pay for name changes. The money gained through it would've been put forth to help the site run better, buuuut it was a no-go.

I personally don't think these name changes should occur just because of the implications that may arise due to them. I agree with Gavin when he says that tier-6 supporters should be the only one who get name changes because it seems fair, however, what about people who are lower tiers or even non-supporters who feel that they should also have changes? What about if people want changes so much that they all start paying to be tier-6 supporters and then name changes will have to be a frequent things (along with down times)?

In my opinion, they're either available to everyone or not and if the server benefits from the 'not' option then name changes shouldn't happen. What do you guys think?

Well that post there just kind of settles it for me. If even one change could damage the server permanently then I guess those who wish for name changes will have to spheal with it.
