[Pokémon] [SWC] Origins

This is the story I entered in the Get-Together Small Writing Contest. I am very proud of it because I've actually received 4th place, even though there were some ties. It was a great competition and I want to congratulate all the other participants!

Note: Story is edited a little bit because, unfortunately, I have caught some mistakes only after sending it. Only spelling mistakes have been revised.

Origins

Kanto, the land of the earliest discovered Pokemon species. They are said to have come from another distant planet, 34rth, as an attempt to further extend their reach into the universe. This is their tale.

It all began unfolding on a warm summer day, at the Jirachi Institute of Space Discovery. Through the numerous offices, all that could be heard was silence, as usual. Everyone was just minding their own business, in the calm atmosphere, either investigating some new meteor or mantaining their prized telescope.

Suddenly, shattering the sound of nothing, a scream of joy was heard from office #42. This thoroughly surprised the higher staff, which, unbeknownst to the lower employees, were watching their every move. Eventually, the whole building was in motion, every Pokemon thinking of a reason someone would yell out of the blue.

Solrock and Lunatone, the two in charge of giving orders to the employees, forbad them to enter the office of the culprit. In turn, they stepped through the metal-covered door, with an old, rusty, 42 written on it.

"Report, Sandshrew. What is it that is so surprising so as to yell and disturb the activity of the others?"

"You may not believe it, Mr. Solrock, but we have finally found the Planet." The armadillo replied, excitement clearly visible on his features.

The Solar Pokemon was visibly taken aback by Sandshrew's statement, and, even if he tried, he couldn't form a coherent sentence. Eventually, all that he could mutter was that a special committee would be formed to further discuss the matter.

One month later, the discovery was everywhere on the news. Everyone from all walks of life knew what was going on. It was going to be a revolutionary day for the Pokemon species. From the young children, to the wise old men, the whole city had their luggage in the streets, waiting for the moment.

Inside the Space Center, the final preparations were done. The Wailord, as they called the giant ship that would be transporting them through the unknown, was ready. The sought-after day had come. No one would suffer anymore from the evils of the old world. Famish, crimes, they would all be gone.

One by one, they all stepped into the giant white ship with numerous red patterns covering it. It was a wonder, and it would surely be capable of a safe voyage. Or so they thought.

After a long, seemingly infinite countdown, the ship wasn't touching the ground anymore. There was no turning back now. They watched as their old planet vanished into nothingness, taking memories of a 3000-year thriving civilisation with it. They breathed. They thought the suffering was done with. They were wrong.

Two months had passed since they had begun the search for a new life. Everything was normal up until now. Unlike life on the planet, living on the ship was exciting and full of surprised. The main reason was that on the shuttle, the Pokemon were all equal, no one superior and no one inferior. As such, they could do whatever they wanted to as long as it was safe.

Several kids were playing hide and seek, at the same time careful not to damage anything. Several adults were playing chess, the old men watched the never-ending movie the windows offered them. One unfortunate mistake by one of the captains, and it would be all over. And that's exactly what happened. A coffee, an innocent handshake, a moment of carelessness, a flicker of electricity.

"Emergency, Engine Gamma is offline. Repeat. Emergency, Engine Gamma is offline."

The sound was blaring through the whole ship, panic getting into each person aboard. They were assured that nothing would happen. Lights began to flicker. A few blinks of an eye later, and the ship's systems were completely dead. No one could register what had happened. They didn't want to.

Their food reserves wouldn't last for long. Without any refrigerators, they would go bad soon. The Pokemon found peace in eating, searching to prolong their life on the ship that was hopelessly drifting through space.

One week later. Food was long gone. They had to survive. For the sake of the species. Sacrifices had to be made, but not then. It was too early. As the innocent children weren't sure of what was happening, the adults were fully conscious of their situation and were helping any way they could. They didn't know it was all in vain. Pushing, pulling, pushing, pulling. Worthlessly. The engine was dead. For ever.

The next day, the bodies of several of the workers were found dead next to the just-as-dead engine. Chansey's investigation shed some light on the case. It turned out that their hearts stopped at the same time. Perhaps destiny had a say in this. Reconstitution of the case revealed that the workers got the engine to work, one of them had a heart attack and fell in the contraption, stopping it yet again. The others tried to help him, only to have a similar fate. Some Pokemon species were extinct, and they haven't even reached their destination. Not that they ever will.

Food. A modern term so commonly used in their days. People had forgotten what it was. When someone asked for food, the other flashed a polite smile, a subtle hint of confusion visible on their tired face.

One by one, they realised that getting to their destination was a challenge they couldn't overcome. However, they wanted to prolong their life as much as possible. Soon, food would become abundant again. This time, it would be fresh.

Some days later, the first victim had been found. Snorlax, who so deeply depended on food, gave up and gave in to his last resort. As a result, Munchlax was no more. Several similar cases happened over the course of the week. Primal instincts began to act, taking the place of rational thought. Soon, the former population of 493 dramatically descended to a low 151. It was horrible. Familiar figures, all gone, leaving behind them motionless and emotionless bodies.

Unknown to anyone was the fact that one engine was still working. The ship was still creeping through space and, with a snail's pace, it continued its voyage to the Planet.

As such, on February 27, 1996, the ship crashed somewhere near Indigo Plateau, Kanto, in a field of flowers. An underground base was built where the dead bodies were stored. There were way more corpses than they remembered, and the estimated number was much higher than 493. It's still unknown how many Pokemon there were, even to this day. The alien creatures may only be able to say their name now, but what's certain is the fact that primal instinct hasn't completely defeated rational thought, as Sandshrew still revives new species of Pokemon every few years.

Hey! Decided to try to review all of the SWC stories posted here. Sorry for the lateness. Been quite busy the last couple weeks. >.> For my SWC reviews I decided to divide it into three sections, the same ones from the contest. However, not going to show the individual scores I, so if you want to see them I can PM them to you (still have the scores saved).

Grammar/Spelling:
Overall the mechanics are fine, and I see you fixed a few things from the entry you PMed me. However, still see some mistakes.

Solrock and Lunatone, the two in charge of giving orders to the employees, forbad them to enter the office of the culprit.
I think the bolded part you mean "forbid" according to the context of the story.

I also saw one part where you have "for ever" when it's suppose to be "forever." There were also a couple mistakes in tenses, like this:

And that's exactly what happened
Since this story is in past tense, I think the bolded part should be "that was" to make the story consistent.

Writing Style:
For the most part it was more of telling what happened during the spaceship trip and not too much emotional description from the characters in this piece. I can understand though you're making this sound more as a folk like story, so don't worry too much. I still like the narrative style as it's not too serious and there were a couple cheeky fun parts here and there.

Story/Prompt:
I like the idea behind this as it's fun reading a sci-fi one shot relating to his prompt. However, it would be nice if you did more showing and not telling of the struggles the people and Pokemon had to go through.

Overall I like the idea behind this although I think the story could be expanded a bit more emotional description wise. Still nice work, though.

Thank you for reviewing my story! Really, it means a lot to me. However, as a completely stupid proud writer I have to defend some of my mistakes XD

wrong:Nobody lives forever.
right:Nobody lives for ever.

forever = continually, all the time: 'He is forever asking me for pocket money.'
for ever = for always

Really, I appreciate you reviewing a lot. It really helps me to become better!:D

No, it's all right if you want to defend your mistakes. I'm not perfect, so you can hark at me if I didn't realize what I thought were mistakes are actually correct.

First one I have to admit I never saw a writer used "for ever." I guess it's me used to "forever." XD

And second, I know "forbidden," but not "forbade." I guess I never seen "forbade" being used either.

Thanks for letting me though! Again, so sorry for pointing out things that aren't mistakes at all. D:
