YOU are a student in the Pokemon Academy of Graythorn City in the Hiue region, a lush, green region with lots of mountains and caves. You've been in the school for quite some time and now it's time for your final exam. A practical battle with loan Pokemon to demonstrate your skill in the handling of Pokemon. You do not notice that someone from PokePol is watching you to see if you're skilled enough. After the battle, which you obviously have won (you will get to keep the Pokemon you chose), you will be halted by this peculiar looking, sun glasses wearing man outside. He takes you with him inside an empty house. He knocks at the bookcase and you fall through a hole into a secret facility of PokePol. The weird looking, sun glasses wearing man guides you to a chamber to your left. He presents you to his boss, Lionel from PokePol, who immediately concludes you are talented and asks if you want to be a Junior Agent of PokePol. Of course you can't decline an offer like this and so you are given a badge and another Pokemon to choose from: Growlithe, Riolu or Mantyke. Also, you're sent out on your first mission: Infiltrate the Finnwood Mansion at the end of Route 3. They believe strange rumors are going on about that mansion lately. Also, some very strange steam is coming from its roof now and then. They want you to further investigate it.
As you venture through the area you encounter many Pokemon and Trainers who want to cross your way. You're being undercover as a Pokemon Trainer, even your own mother doesn't know you're in fact a Junior Agent of PokePol. To get into the mansion you'll need to become a friend of the landlady, Lady Finnwood, because she wants to invite the best Trainers in the region to her party. Therefore you need to beat her in a Pokemon battle on the Diamond Cruise. However, before you can get onto the S.S. Diamond you'll need a Pearl Ticket, which is very expensive. Since you can't afford that much money you'll need to find someone who can give you one. Luckily the waiter in front of the cruise ship gives you a hint: "Sorry mate, can't let you through. The only way to get in here is to somehow acquire a Pearl Ticket. I believe the captain's daughter was very ill, maybe she can give you her ticket. She lives in that dock house right there." And so you are sent to the dock house where Lady Platinum Berlitz lives. She is willing to give you her ticket if you beat her in a battle. She may look like a cute girl with weak Pokemon, her Pokemon are not at all weak and even vicious. She has a Mawile and a Sneasel, nothing like you would expect from a little girl like that. Anyway, once you defeat her she gives you the Pearl Ticket and mocks you for probably not being able to beat her auntie Lady Cynthia Finnwood. "She really is invincible."
With the Pearl Ticket you can go aboard the S.S. Diamond, where you can meet-'n-beat many Trainers, just like you, who also happen to be very rich. Therefore they use Pokemon like Snubbull, Skitty, Clefairy and Mime Jr. There are many, many Trainers, but only one of them has the key to enter Lady Finnwood's suite, the Suite Key. And when you finally found this Trainer he appears to be quite powerful. This was Uncle Sam, also a relative of the Berlitz and Finnwood families. When you finally show up in Lady Finnwood's private suite she immediately wants to battle you, because yo have spirit. Also, she seems to recognize something in you and she starts to ask questions about your father. (Your father is actually Lord Hogarth Berlitz, the captain of the Aquatus, but you don't know that. You're being raised by foster parents, because you have been told your mother and father both either died or abandoned you.) When she doesn't find a satisfactory answer she starts battling you. After you beat her she'll grant you with HM 01: Cut to cut away the Royal Trees that stand in the way of Finnwood Mansion.
