T_T I'll take that as a yes
Satire is the most popular and persuasive form of political slander used in the American media. Satire is a literary composition, in verse or pose, in which human folly or vice are held to scorn, derision, or ridicule. Satire, more often than not, includes some form of irony or sarcasm. Satire is not only used to discredit candidates, but also to persuade viewers to vote a certain way. One of the most powerful forms of persuasion seen in American media today is satire.
The public can come across political satire in all different forms of media. The most popular media used to spread political ideas and opinions, is television. An example of political satire found on the television, is the Daily Show. The Daily Show is a more humorous take on of political satire, but it has an effect all the same. This show, more or less, mocks politicians, presidential candidates, and occurrences that they disagree with or find ironic.
Another form of media used to manipulate your thoughts with images, satire, and ideas, is publication. One of the most renowned publications out there, pertaining to the political genre, is the New York Times. The New York Times publishes a newspaper that is circulated throughout the country along with a magazine. In the September 3, 2007 issue of the New York Times magazine (upfront), the race for presidency is depicted as a marathon race on the front cover. To the naked eye it is no more than a picture, but to the trained eye it is a subliminal advertisement. By the mere positioning and poise of the candidates, the reader can determine the political standings of the New York Times (see attachment). The three to the right, the republican candidates, are all poised in a silly position as opposed to the three on the left, the democratic candidates, are all very proud and confident in stature. From this alone we can conclude that the New York Times favors the democratic candidates in the 2008 election. It may not seem like much, but this picture alone will leave a subliminal impression within your mind. You will forever subconsciously refer back to the picture.
There are several strategies used by the media to enhance their specific tone or purpose. One of the most influential strategies used by the media is emotional appeal. Emotional appeal is imagery designed to stimulate one's emotions, rather than one's sense of practicality. Advertisements pertaining to propositions are well known for the use of emotional appeal. These ads often use small children, most of which have cancer, to tell you why you should, or should not, vote yes on any given proposition. This, once again, will leave a subliminal impression in your brain. You will subconsciously recall to the emotions brought upon by the advertisement. An influential strategy used in advertisement, is emotional appeal.
Another effective tactic used in advertisement is logical appeal. Logical appeal is the strategic use of logic, claims, and evidence to convince an audience of a certain point. When used correctly, logical appeal includes such elements as strong claims, reasonable qualifiers for the claims, and acknowledgement of the opposition. Many, if not all, presidential candidates use logical appeal throughout their campaign.
Overall, American media has a great impact on our political lives. Advertisement will come in all different shapes and sizes, leaving ever lasting images and ideas in your subconscious mind. Political advertisement is one of the most used tactics in the political world today. Countless strategies have been invented, all in hopes of persuading or, moreover, manipulating the human brain with subliminal messages and subconscious images.
