Well I don't know if he would catch a Eeveelution that has been owned by a main character or rival. Espeon is one of the few that hasn't been. (Not counting Virgil)

Flareon - Ursula
Vaporeon - Lana and Ursula
Umbreon - Gary and Gladieon
Glaceon - May and Cynthia
Leafeon - Zoey
Sylveon - Serena

So Jolteon and Espeon are the only ones not owned by a main character or main rival. And I don't think he would get Jolteon because of Pikachu.

Now if he caught a Shiny Eevee and evolved it in a Sylveon or something else, I could see them doubling up.

As for Hippowdon, in Sinnoh, he became friends with a reoccurring Hippopatas that, I think, he traveled with for a couple of episodes. Similar to Sandile in Unova. Many people at the time thought that would be one of his pokemon. Which is why I think he could possibly catch it in the future. I don't think he did because he had Gligar/Gliscor and Gible.
 
i have a feeling that Ash will encounter Tyranitar and catch it as it will turn out to be that little Larvitar he encountred during the johto series

1.Oh, althought i'm pretty sure Misty will get an Eevee and evolve it into an Vaporeon (unless she will evolve it into an Flareon like 1kids Misty wants to), since come on she has it in Let's go Eevee if you have a rematch with her
2.Yeah there's a tradition that pikachu must be his only electric pokemon as he failed to catch Alolan Geodude, he doesn't have the trouble with OTHER pokemon

I'm hoping that will happen as well. However... with him already close to 6 Pokemon it may not happen. Unless they go the BW route and let him catch more than 6. Considering Gou has... what? 20+ now or something like that? (I'm not keeping count) I suppose it's at least possible they'll let him catch more than 6. Considering most of the Pokemon Ash has been getting are pretty damn decent (sans Gengar IMO) that would make him even more broken/OP. lol. Which is perfectly fine with me.

I think that is a reason he will get more than 6. Mr. Mime technically isn't his and not actively traveling with him.

Because he is catching evolved pokemon, I think that is why he will catch more. The big reason he hasn't in the past is so that they can train and develop pokemon not as strong. He is only in the first state of the Wolrd Tournament right now. If I am not mistaken, there will probably be 2 more levels for him to go through.

As he gets closer to the top, he will need more pokemon.
 
I made a mistake on Vaporeon. I was thinking Lana evolved Vaporeon at some point in the anime, but it is still an Eevee.

As for Ash, it is also very possible for them to add a new Eeveelution into the DLC for Sword and Shield. If that is the case, Ash might get an Eevee and evolve it into a new pokemon, similar to how the handled Poipole, Melmetal and Dusk Lycanroc.

I know they haven't announced it, but they said themselves they want to keep stuff hidden for as long as possible to make it a surprise. And currently, we know little about the DLCs. We do know they are adding new pokemon and Galarians Forms, so we still could get a new Eeveelution.

1.Figures, maybe the new season will add Vaporeons to Misty and Lana if they return as guest characters (specially if my Vaporeon was angry at me in Sacred Gold) in the new anime
2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8u7px_GzWQ, i mean it's an even generation, i doubt GF just trolled us Eeveelution supporters (specialy as i grew to like Brawleon and Nimbeon designs from FR romhacks) and are planning to add them as DLCs

What do you think will be happening with Ash's formerly owned Greninja in the Journeys series from the anime right after managing to save the Kalos region from ex-Team Flare, along with Squishy and Z2?

As for Greninja. We don't know yet. We currently have not seen any of Ash's old pokemon even though he is currently mostly in Kanto and using his new pokemon. The Greninja in the very first poster we see could be someone else's. It is hard to say what they plan, but I assume he will need it at some point. They could handle it like Charizard.
