The Coming Storm [pg17]

Tobias swerved through the congregations of people inside the KLA base. Stepping around circle after circle he spotted Professor Oak, the leader of the KLA. " Hello Professor," Tobias shouted. " Hello Toby, we should head to a quieter place. Toby followed him to the next room. "Take a seat," Oak said, sitting down in front of the desk. " We need you to check on a SR station at Cerulean City. Gather as much information as possible. They do not need to know you were there," Oak asked. " Consider it done," replied Toby. Toby exited the room and into the gathering room. He once again navigated his way through the hordes of people and stepped outside into Pewter City.

Vera turned abruptly as a young man exited the building. She recognised him immediately.
"Good evening, Mr Fletcher." Vera was never certain how to address the more experienced members of the KLA, and Tobias Fletcher was highly respected, despite his youth. Many of the younger recruits were inspired by him.
"Is there anything I could do tonight?"

" Good evening Mr.Fletcher," exclaimed Vera. Tobias looked at her, nodded and moved forward. " Is there anything I could do tonight," Vera asked. " Nothing I can think of," Tobias replied. " I'm off to Cerulean so I don't think you can come along." Vera slipped back inside and Tobias walked towards Route 3. Once he reached Route 3, Tobias jogged over to his dwelling and grabbed his bicycle. His dwelling was not much, a mere burrow in the rock cliff, but Toby had all the
provisions he needed. He mounted his bicycle and rode off to Mt.Moon, where a small camp of KLA troops were stationed. While cycling down the road, he was approached by two members of the SR.

Ahmar had been sitting on a bench outside the KLA building as two other new members met, then one of them went back inside while the other walked off down the road towards Mt. Moon.

"They don't know what they're up against," said Ahmar as if he was more experienced than them, and stood up from the bench. He walked down one of the streets, heading for a seafood place he had grown to like on his first visit to Pewter City three years ago. As he grabbed the door handle and began to open it, he heard a gruff voice behind him and felt breathing on the back of his neck.

"Hey kid, what's the Team Rocket motto? Sing it for me or face my Pokemon!"

Ahmar sighed. He didn't want to fight an SR member right now, but the guy obviously wasn't giving Ahmar any options. He began to sing horribly off-key, screeching the words so they were barely understandable. The grunt covered his ears and snapped, "Hey, kid, do it right or I won't take it!"

Slipping his right hand on his belt and pulling out a Pokeball, Ahmar smiled. "Then don't take it," he retorted. "take my Krabby's attacks."

The grunt glared at Ahmar and pulled out his own Pokeball. "You've crossed the line now," he snarled. "Shame you won't get any seafood. Maybe I can get the guards to slip you a treat occasionally, but don't expect any nice treatment."

Vera sat down in the lobby of the KLA Headquarters, silently withdrawing Charmeleon. She felt like she needed to do something, but had no idea where to start.
She sighed and sat back in her chair, deep in thought. What difference could she make? Her parents were missing, presumed dead, and her brother was a leading force of the SR machine. Something had to be done.

"Frost!"
Vera jumped up as she broke out of her reverie. She turned to find the person calling her name, and came face to face with one of the KLA leaders, wearing a sharp suit and horn-rimmed glasses.

"There are Rocket members in Pewter, and as far as I'm aware, only the new guy is out there."

"Say no more Miss Ridge," Vera said, making her way to the door. "I'll sort it."

"Wait. We want to see how well this guy can do. Just keep your distance, and if things get messy, be ready to jump in."

"Right. I'll keep an eye out."
As Vera turned to leave, Ridge said "They're by the Seafood place. Make sure you're not seen. We'll be on standby for your distress signal."

Vera left the building, lifting her hood over her face. She walked casually alongside the walls, stopping when the new guy was in sight. She leaned against the nearest building, appearing nonchalant.
Let's see what this guy can do.

Ahmar didn't notice Vera leaning on the wall several yards away. All he saw was the grunt leering at him, and all he heard was his shouts as his Golbat appeared in front of him. Ahmar tossed his own Pokeball, and out came Krabby.

Krabby was a stubborn, tough Pokemon, who could take more than a few hits without feeling pain. He clapped his pinchers together, awaiting a command.

"All right, Krabby. Just like we practiced. Use Crab Hammer," Ahmar ordered. His voice was surprisingly calm, as if the battle was too easy. Krabby grunted, stepping up to Golbat and raising his pincher. It slammed down on Golbat, causing it to step back and hold up its wings, forming a shield.

"It's scared of us," Ahmar taunted. "It doesn't want to attack."

"That's what you think! Golbat, Wing Attack!" The grunt obviously was more emotional than Ahmar.

Golbat's shield had suddenly turned into a weapon, sweeping out to the sides and slapping Krabby across the face. Krabby didn't show any signs of pain, snapping at Golbat several times and blowing a Bubblebeam attack at its opponent. Golbat couldn't take the barrage of attacks and began to stagger weakly at Krabby before falling to the ground.

"I-impossible. Zubat, let's finish 'em off."

Another Pokeball landed on the ground, and in a flash of light a Zubat appeared, flapping its wings hard to stay in the air.

"All right. I've had enough resistance out of you. Zubat, go for the trainer's neck."

"Poliwhirl, Water Gun!"

Vera leapt from behind the wall and jumped to the new trainer's aid. He'd battled brilliantly, but there was no way he'd survive a Pokemon attack.

Poliwhirl shot forward, and the grunt's Zubat was thrust out of the air by a powerful blast of water.

"Alright! Now Poliwhirl, Body Slam!"
The Poliwhirl leapt at the bat pokemon before it regained air, and the two crashed to the floor. Both Vera and Poliwhirl prepared for the retaliation, but it never came. The Rocket Grunt withdrew Zubat before turning on his heel and sprinting towards Mt. Moon.

"Your Krabby certainly is impressive." Vera said casually, grinning at the new boy. "Vera Frost, if you were wondering. Welcome to the KLA."

The two SR members approached Tobias.
" What is the Team Rocket Motto," One grunt asked.
" It's a secret," Toby replied.
" This one thinks he is tough," the other grunt blurted.
" We can take him," One grunt exclaimed.
" You go first," the other one said.
" Go, Sandslash," the grunt shouted as he let his Sandshrew out of it's Pokeball.
" You can take him Poliwhirl," Toby retorted as his Poliwhirl came into the battle.

" Poliwhirl use BubbleBeam," Tobias shouted. A large stream of bubbles flew out of Poliwhirl's mouth and towards the opponent's Sandshrew. The bubbles hit the Sandshrew, knocking it down.
" Hmm.. Interesting," the grunt said.

"Uh, thanks," Ahmar said, stroking his small goatee. "I'm Ahmar Koutan, I'm a new recruit of the KLA. I assume you've been here longer than me?"

As he spoke, he withdrew his Krabby and his thoughts drifted to the grunt he'd just battled. Jeez, if this is what I'm up against, I'll have to redo my whole strategy. Whatever, he seemed easy enough until the end.

The SR member recalled his Sandshrew. " Hmmph.." the SR member grunted. The other grunt oushed the first one aside. " I am the better battler," the grunt exclaimed. " Go, Hypno," the grunt shouted as his Hypno came out of it's pokeball. " Hypno, use Thunder Punch!" Suddenly, Hypno's fist started producing electrical energy. The Hypno ran towards Poliwhirl and punched Poliwhirl right in the stomach. Poliwhirl flew back and hit his back against the cliff. Poliwhirl fell down the edge of the cliff and sat down at the bottom, crumpled and hurt. " Poliwhirl, return," Tobias exclaimed as Poliwhirl retreated into its Pokeball. " Go, Dragonair," Tobias shouted as Dragonair exited its Pokeball and entered the Battle. " Dragonair, use Draco Meteor," Tobias shouted. Meteors then were summoned from the sky, all aimed at the enemy Hypno. Meteor after Meteor hit the Hypno, as it was knocked around by the Meteorites. Suddenly, the storm stopped and the Hypno struggled to stay conscious. The grunt recalled his Hypno.

"Not much longer, no." Vera replied, flicking her hair from her eyes. "Since the attack on Viridian, really."

Ahmar withdrew his Krabby, his eyes glazed over with deep thought.

"Weren't expecting them to fight so dirty, huh? As soon as everyone thinks they've sunk as low as they can, they grab a shovel." Vera replied to Ahmar's unvoiced thought. She could barely conceal the bitterness in her voice.

Vera withdrew Poliwhirl, congratulating it as she did so.
"There may be more... Should we follow him?" She asked her new ally. She was itching for some adventure, anything that she could consider productive. Beating some Grunts seemed to fit the bill perfectly.

Ahmar laughed coldly and said, "Sure. It would probably do me good to kick some butt. Time for some sweet revenge, just the way I like it best."

Fire in his eyes, Ahmar tossed his chain around his neck and charged off in the direction the grunt had taken.

" Hmm.. you win this time. but Silph-Rocket will return," The Grunts shouted as they ran towards Cerulean City. Tobias followed them back to the City. Alex saw a hanging rock with bushes growing on it. Perfect place, Tobias thought. Tobias stealthy climbed up the rock and looked at Cerulean. SR members were all over the place, but it seemed like they were getting ready to leave.
