The Crystal OOC

NO.

Anyone who has actually read the book, The Golden Compass (Northern Lights here in the UK) will tell you how unbelievably bad the film is in comparison. They gave all the Oxfordians plummy accents despite their rough accents being clearly decribed within the book, they made Lyra and Roger's relationship thin and shabby, they thought that getting Daniel Craig to do Lord Asriel would be enough, but he didn't match the character enough. Nicole Kidman looks nothing like the Mrs Coulter described in the books. (At least, how the books let me imagine her). The Golden Monkey was not vicious enough. Large parts of the plot were cut out inexplicably and detracted from the arc of the storyline. Iorek Byrnison was given GOLD armour. GOLD! It's explicitly stated in the books that bears only use sky-iron for armour, apart from Iofur Raknison, who does wear gold but only because he has been corrupted by Mrs Coulter to wear it. As I remember, the bear-daemon part was cut from this part of the film too, as was the battle finale, in which Iorek Byrnison reveals that his injury had been mimed and actually rips Iofur Raknison's lower jaw off. Also, as I remember, the ending from the book of Roger's death and separation from his daemon causing a huge energy spike that rips open the pathway to the world of Cittagazze and ultimately leads the way to the beginning of the second book, was cut - I can't clearly remember as I could not bear to watch all the way to the end. Plus, most of the religious connotations were removed from the film due to their controversial role within the books, meaning the General Oblation Board's motives were thin and unbelievable.

It was terrible and I will not hear a good word for it.

(Oh, but they got Stelmarina spot on. Y'know, apart from the fact that she was SUPPOSED to kill Roger's daemon at the end but, y'know.)
Crap, looks like I pissed of a nerd. Hell hath now furry like a nerd who actualy knows the cannon of a plot.

Too right you did! *rageface*

Yes, I am a sucker for the canon set by official books etc.

I act this way around His Dark Materials, the Silverwing Saga, the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, Harry Potter, Heroes, Doctor Who, Primeval and, of course, Full Moon wo Sagashite.

The Eragon movie disappointed me, so I didn't read the books, and then someone told me how good the books were, so I started, and they were AMAZING! It makes me really wonder how such an amazing book can have such a low quality movie =/

*Raises hand to Kon for a high five* Hooray for great stories and nerdy attention to their details!

Seriously, how has this thread not already exploded from our awesomeness. :3

Also - I've decided to actually write this novel idea I've had for a while. The original had far too many characters and a very loose plot, so I'm taking the most important, switching things about a bit, creating a plot (of sorts) and I need a name for the male main character.

He is human (yes, this is one of those novels where you need to specify that), 23 years old, oh, and the time frame is similar to that of the Crystal. :3

He needs a name. Suggestions? :3

Whats the plot? :P..........

Whats the plot? :P..........

Very VERY loosely...

After all the world's resources ran out and there was no sustainable source of food left, every person on earth was placed on life support (such as what people are put on when in a coma) and their conciousnesses loaded into a massive computer system where they lived out their lives until their true bodies withered and died. The system is upheld by a select few who volunteer to survive on the limited rations of artificial food left on earth so that they might stay concious and keep the system running. Within the system, the timeframe is like medieval, unlike the futuristic truth, and the only person who is aware of the entire thing is an ex-scientist, Kaine, who was placed into the system against his will as punishment for killing his girlfriend. His girlfriend was within the system at the time, and so without an earthly body, her conciousness alone exists there as an omnipotent being known as Machi. Kaine tries to convince others of the lie they are living a lie and that if only more people were freed from the system, artificial food production could rise and people could live truthfully again. At the same time, something is happening to the system - in vengeance of Kaine, Machi is slowly breaking down the entire world in an attempt to destroy him. Kaine thinks that the only way to beat this is to close down the system and free everyone, and Lei is the only one who will help him, but she is only doing this because she has been convinced to in secret by Machi. Kaine travels across the land to the place where he knows the core of the system exists, but is shocked when he realises that Machi herself is the core of the system. Machi tells him of how happy the people are to live in this world and that the truth, he should know, is bleak and inhabitable. Kaine realises that closing down the system would be like condemning thousands to their death, much like Machi would be if he continued to exist there, so he joins Machi in the core and the world is saved, but Kaine's earthly body dies.

THE END. :)
(c) Kon~, DO NOT STEAL.

EDIT: Yeah, I decided on the name Kaine. :) Unless you can dissude me.

Bad ending.... :P Sounds like a leavel of fallout 3 where you have to go into this program where there is this one crazy guy (looks like a small girl though *shuders) and he is manipulating everyone, and killing them off. You end up killing most of them to find out where your dad is. He was changed into the dog.... Then you two escape, and everyone else dies :P Yay!

I'm going to flesh out the ending a little. There's going to be a huge realisation on Kaine's end, Machi is going to manipulate people a lot (including holding Lei hostage) and Machi is going to guilt-trip Kaine for killing her. And then Kaine saves the world but dies.

There are no man-dogs to speak of. :|
