OK! This is the first time I'm doing any kind of New Year's Resolution, but it's also quite serious.

My resolution is, or well, more like, are...

Get a new job that actually fits my education and skills

My current job is just a regular desk job of which I don't really find the drive in... it's kind of like working a job you shouldn't really be working. And the pay is dreadful, but I guess I'm working because I have to. It's temporary, though.

Sounds pretty simple, right? But we haven't got to the fun part yet. You see, as it's really tough as a Computer Science degree holder to get a job with long-term prospects in Malaysia or Singapore...

Get settled in a foreign country

This probably comes in hand with the above. No biggie, really, but hey, there's this...

Move to the United States of America

    Wait, whaaaaaaaaaaat?

Yes, I know the timing is bad and all, what with all the recent happenings, but... I've been talking with a lot of friends, high-school and primary-school classmates, and online buds, and they all arrived to the conclusion that I'm far better off elsewhere. (OK, the United Kingdom might work, too - then again, same deal. Depends on what kind of jobs I eventually get into.)

I just hope that, I get all the help I can, and with any luck, I'll eventually make my way all the way to a job, a career that I actually want to be in, in addition to having a much better quality of life.

Well first and foremost you'll need to amass a lot of money. Have you got much saved up? I'd recommend you do some serious budgeting if you've got poor income and intend to also move to another country.

I suppose, though I'm not really hurting for money. Besides, I'd need to get properly confirmed for my next job before any travel plans can really show up.

I just hope that I end up being able to accomplish something...

I think that it's unlikely you'll get a job in the states or UK if you aren't already set up there tbh. I'm no expert but it makes more sense to me to move and do menial work whilst you hunt for a job in your preferred industry.

    That probably would work, too.

I guess I should get started by finding work, at least. Now to wonder where are good places to start...

Hey, how's it going? I know it must be hard to make an incremental update with such large goals as uprooting your entire life, but I just want to know how you're holding up! Gimme is right in that there's few that would let you get a job from another country THEN get you to move. At least with the US, it's very difficult to get someone a visa only come here to work. Actually, I'm not entirely sure how to get to get a visa to come over here AND work, since usually you are forbidden. I think that process will be longer and more important to start on than to get a job.

Yeah... I think I need to apply for a job and have things arranged once I'm confirmed. This might take a very long time before anything really happens, though at least I've completely fixed my description on job-seeking sites (which, for some bizarre reason, was entirely empty - this might have hurt my chances a lot in the first place)

I probably should also start writing a revised resume/CV.

OK, how deep this rabbit hole goes?

Shower thoughts about NVIDIA? Check. Seeing as I'm already partaking in a potentially unofficial NVIDIA Discord server, I went ahead and voiced about my plans. Along with a lot of other places on other Discord servers (gee, I must love Discord)

    Oh boy.

Now I wound up with a nicely-filled in LinkedIn profile as I realized that I never had one (nice to also be able to make connections to classmates pretty much immediately en masse!) and actually found quite a bunch of open internship and new grad jobs that I qualify for!

To bite or not... oh god. They don't make it clear if they're accepting foreign applications, though, though I was told to try anyway.

I suppose having a LinkedIn will only help, though.

I never thought a coder needed help finding a job. Have you tried hitting up reddit? They've got job-posting for video-game coders all the time! Mainly with details on pay and work-time.

And if you really wanna live in the U.S., I recommend a low-profile area surrounded by other larger cities. My humble abode's so peaceful, the cops are chill as f*ck! Hardly anything worse than a fender-bender, but some crimes are still committed here and there... But things don't get political unless you work at the local Whataburger.

    ...Eeeeeeeeeeeeeh...

Welp, went ahead and did some overseas applications earlier this morning before I went to work. I wonder if that means my time with my current work is basically up soon... I hope so, since that'd mean I'm out of that rather meh job.

Which sub-reddit is best for this? You'd be surprised if you tried to find work locally first. Turns out nobody wants a fresh grad here.

    Hehe...

    Hehe...

This sub is super professional, and allows you to either post want-adds or advertise yourself to potential employers. And this one's mostly hobby-oriented, but better suited for people looking for whole teams. I used to post on both, but then I ran out of money, so my ideas are now pipe dreams. ; ^; But you're actually skilled, so I don't need to pray for you. XD

I know. I've made a post in the former... I wish myself luck, someday...

Also went ahead and fired off a few more job applications, some more for new graduates than anything else. I think I probably accidentally applied for some that I don't quite qualify for (needing to still be in university) but I suppose I'm mostly fine.

Besides these, do you think there are more job-searching sites I can look at?

At this point, I can only recommend posting on the former sub once a week (which many people do, to increase their chances of getting a bite on their hooks instead of simply posting one thread), or Google.

One and a half month in... I think I've ran into quite a lot of false starts. Sometimes a promising email comes in, and I open it, only to find out that it's either irrelevant or I'm not qualified anyway.

Others, well, they just dropped like a rock.

Then there's one that didn't follow up at all after firing an email and exchanging Skype contact details.

But I'll keep going. It's not like I have anything to lose - even if I do end up failing, I'll just be able to make do. I want to be able to better myself, my life, and everyone around me, though. So I'll keep trying. Probably even try more job search sites.

I guess I need to go back to the drawing board and re-evaluate my options.

I think I really need to calm my nerves or something. My palms are sweaty as I type this. I'm not even sure if applying for jobs within Microsoft UK or the original might even work for me - someone with zero experience and stuff - but I have to try!

I mean, this is something that I would love to work in, and the jobs seemed perfect. It would be a waste to just let them go.

So I did. Now to wonder about my own luck.

I probably should wish myself luck again. I think I'm gonna need as much of it as I can - that, and being able to prove myself.

Ask indie devs, or Valve if you still feel like doing some video game stuff. Basically, don't stop applying everywhere.

Apply to this company, https://www.netfor.com/. Not sure how they would handle your not living here, but if you want you should apply if you can secure a living situation in America. I work for this company as a regular tech support agent. They are a fast growing company as well who need people with good skills and know there way around computer systems. Try to apply and explain your situation or just apply if you wind up moving here before you have secured a job.

Heh. I don't really have any customer support experience, though. Might be a bit trying, but I'll try anyway...

    COME TO THE UK FROOFY

Oh noes! How am I supposed to resist that? (Would be nice if I'm able to move!)

    ---

Well... seems like I probably should start by going for an entry-level C# or C++ programming job first. Local is fine, as long as I eventually get enough experience to be more easily considered for a foreign hire.

Just... I'm kind of afraid of getting scammed...
