hmmm... I googled it , and the only thing that I got was a kind of biography of Ash...
It says: 'Ash gets on his 10 birthday his pokemon , just like Gary'
If it was really on his 10th birthday , why did Gary get his pokemon on the same day then...?

Yea I always wondered if Gary and Ash had the same birthdays. It would make sense, but then there were 4 trainers that left on the same day, and whats the chances of 4 people having the same birthday when you live in a town as small as Pallet?

The closest thing that I heared of a birthday was that episode in Johto...
(too bad Gary wasn't in it... >.<)
There was some kind of book and Misty , Brock and Ash looked up their birthdays in that book... The book tells them with pokemon they were :s

I think that is the closest that we are going to get of a birthday in the Anime...
