A slight crossover with Animorphs, but you don't need any background knowledge on this to read.

    Summary:
Five teenagers suddenly gain the power to morph into pokemon. They soon meet the enigmatic Lark, another morpher of their age. Bit by bit, he reveals to them the deeply mysterious mission into which they are now thrust.

    Prologue
The evening crawled nearer, the glow of the skies quivered in seeming bliss. Behind, in an obscure alley, six teenagers, two girls, four boys, crept there. The tallest and oldest shifted cautiously forward, turned round and whispered to his team. "Okay…coast's clear."

He held his breath and felt the changes within him. His body fell and fell, was shrinking and shrinking. Grimacing, even as he closed his eyes, he could hear the crunching and grinding of his bones as they restructured into something a lot harder. The pale, slightly tanned skin on his arms roughened into stony layers. Suddenly, he silently screamed in horror as his long legs were rapidly sucked into his body, and disappeared. But he soon recovered from his shock, and opened his eyes. "Geodude!"

[Hey Dak!] shouted a glowing orange Magby who grinned at him. [You look cool, dude. I mean you rock!]

Dactyl Durance answered back, [Spark, I am a rock!.] Ignoring Spark Ephire, he glanced curiously at the others. The other two boys had transformed into a shimmering Staryu and a restless Taillow.

[Hey guys, quit fooling around, let's go!] At this, the four boys, the Geodude, Magby, and Staryu gazed back, the Taillow perched and cocked his head. A gentle yet agile looking Nidoran F stared back, followed by a sleek, dark grey Poochyena.

[Hi girls, you both sure look cute!] observed the Staryu.

[Whatever you like, Sulphur.] The Nidoran F seemed to grin at Sulphur Ice, the Staryu. [See if you boys can outrun me and Nocturna!] She instantly sped off on her hard armoured feet, whilst the Poochyena, Nocturna ran suit on velvet paws.

Sulphur Ice turned back towards the other pokemon, [Guys, Gem's a bit hyper ever since getting her new power!]

Lark Lone the Taillow answered, [She's not the only one who's feeling hyper.]

Dactyl Durance had to agree as he smiled inside, following Gem Emerald the Nidoran with his stone-rimmed eyes.

    Chap 1: Power Bestowed

    Chap 1: Power Bestowed

It was just any normal day.

"Oops!" He almost stepped on a magazine titled 'Artists'. Though Dak was a history major, he always had a secret love for art: paintings, music, literature! Whilst he curiously flicked, he couldn't help feeling somewhat peculiar.

Something caught his eye: 'Emille Zola and his interpretation of Humanity', hmmm… Strange, his eyes were so tired. Oh well, that always happens when you read too much…But there was still a lingering worry that something was not right.

"Yo dude, what's that green stuff?" hissed a voice. Spark Ephire approached carefully. A green powdery substance glowed languidly in front of Dak's eyes.

Something stung his eyes! The green intensified threateningly, until he couldn't stand it anymore. Yet strangely, the pain subsided as quickly as it came, and the green diluted into nothingness. "Spark, did ya see what I just saw?" whispered Dak, tense and trembling.

"I didn't see anything! The green powder totally blocked my vision and my eyes hurt!" Pause. "It's as if the powder was trying to get in my eyes."

His friend stared wide-eyed back at him. "What? But how can anything gaseous get sucked in so quickly, like in two seconds?"

For once, Spark was not his cheery self. "I don't know, Dak, I don't know. But whatever it was, I have a bad feeling about it."

That night, Dactyl Durance returned quietly to his flat. A brightly colored blue envelope waited on the table, addressed to him. As soon as he touched it, a smooth milk-cream letter slid out of its own accord. "Huh?"

    Dear Dactyl Durance,

Touch a normal, fighting, rock or ground pokemon and 'feel'.

He glared hard at the imperative tone of the letter. Yet something about it enticed him to obey.

"Sentret!" His pet sentret snuggled close, jumping up and down bubbling and chortling.

Without thinking, Dak placed his hand carefully on it and 'felt'. He jolted.

Dactyl was feeling something, some secret vitality, energy rushing up his arms and filling his body. At the same time, the giddy sentret stopped hopping, slowly closed its eyes in a peaceful sleep. As soon as the energy rush stopped, he removed his hand, Sentret awakened too. "Sentret, Sentret, Sentret!" The happy pokemon jumped arbitrarily around the room, back to normal again.

    The letter continued:

Breathe deeply, and find your focus.
"What, a meditation manual?" But after raising his eyebrows he curiously followed the instructions anyway. All of a sudden, he felt a strange, grinding in his ears, a softening of his legs…"Huh?"

    Feel the change!

Thus commanded the letter. "What change?" His pet sentret was staring at him, jumping wildly and backing away from its trainer in fear.
When Dak looked down at his body, he saw brown, grey and white hairs sprouting everywhere. He wanted to scream, but shock stilled him. Something soft grew out of his head and spine, he felt them—Oh no, what happened to my hands? Well, actually they were paws. Sentret paws.

Gasping, Dactyl opened the wardrobe and gazed into the mirror. [I-I-I'm a sentret!] The reverberant, strange sound that was his voice shocked him. [Did I just speak like that?] Yet all his pet sentret heard was "Tret! Tret! Sen-tret!" It wasn't sure what he meant. It wasn't even quite sure if this was its trainer anymore.

Chapter 2: Enter the New World

She knew she should be doing her French coursework right now…The deadline's not till a whole week! But you need more than a week to write it! But I want to chill out! But you'll fail your…Oh be quiet! But if you… Whilst the internal struggle of "buts" continued, her hand shot out with relentless speed and snatched up the little quiz book.

"What pokemon type most matches your personality?"

Her eyes rocketed into the page. "Gem?" Gem Emerald frowned slightly at this disturbance from her intriguing book. But recognizing the voice as her best friend's, she responded, "What's up, Belle?" Isabelle fingered her misty blond hair, "Uh, aren't you tired of doing your homework? Why don't we go outside for a bit of fresh air for a while?"

Gem glanced at Isabelle's long golden tresses; they were so alive, so rich, so 'lithe'. She grimly regarded the monotonous brown hair resting on her shoulders. "Ah sure, why not. Wait till I get through this." Belle sighed, shrugged and walked away to wait.

Errr, is it just me or are the words suddenly a bit green?……

After the shock, pain, surprise, excitement, thrill, joy and ecstasy that night, she called Isabelle—who left after waiting an hour for Gem—but she wasn't in her flat. Oh well. She dialed another number.

    "Hey Sulphur! Guess what!"

Sulphur Ice could practically feel the trembling and colors of her voice brimming into his ears. "Gem, I've got something to tell you too, but you first: ladies first."

"Oh you won't believe what I'm about to say! I was reading a quiz book and—"

    "Another quiz book?"

"Yes and something was in front of my eyes, it hurt them a bit, and then I got this mysterious white letter in a blue envelope that flew out as soon as I prodded it……"

    "Go on."

    "The letter said:

    'Gem Emerald,

Touch a normal, grass, bug or poison pokemon and feel.

Breathe deeply and find your focus.

    Feel the change!' "

Sulphur felt himself smiling so hard to himself; he wondered if he could talk properly. Luckily he did. "Well y' know, the same thing happened to me, except it said 'touch a normal, water, ice or steel pokemon.' "

Gem Emerald grinned inside. Warmth welled up in her heart; giddiness electrified her spirits. How wonderful it was that one of her closest and possibly second best friend could share this life-changing experience with her! But wait.

"Sul, did you really mean that or were you just saying it? Because what I'm about to say will just scare you out of your wits."

"Frighten me then! Anyway, were you gonna say that you really went to touch a pokemon, and suddenly turned into it? Then you somehow figured a way to turn back?"

"Uh,…yeah…how did you guess?" The slow lingering sentence ending seemed suggestive.

"Ha! Because that happened to me too!" he answered

Next day, after their last classes, Gem ran in a frenzy to tap Sulphur Ice's door. Once she was in, they looked at each other, cheeky grins all over their faces.

    "Sul, transform!"

"Uh uh, ladies first!" She groaned, pouted, but concentrated on the change.

Slowly, her skin began to ruffle; her muscles trembled and blurred into position. Layers of pink-red zapped along her spine. She clenched her jaws as she watched her legs and arms shrivel and shorten into stubs. More stubs tickled out of her forming two uniform rows of stubs. Finally, her head melted into a bizarre shape, and her eyes dilated into abnormally large watery orbs. The change was complete.

"No offense Gem, but that was the most disgusting thing I've ever seen!"

[Like you'd be able to morph any more smoothly!] Sul just raised his arms and shrugged his shoulders.

"At least I picked a handsomer pokemon!"

Without another word, Gem watched through wurmple's huge eyes as her second best friend's body flowed smoothly, like in an aquarium. His stature shrunk shorter and shorter until it at last smoothed up his whole body into a round shape. A daintily forked tail stretched out and flapped at the ground. The gradually paling skin was soon suffused with a clean sheet of blue, gently dappled with specks of ice white. It smiled at her.

Meanwhile, Gem was open-mouthed, well, she would be anyway if she had a proper mouth. Sulphur was a much smoother morpher than her.

    [What do you think?]

A faintly lemon-green light twitched in her eyes as she replied, [Not strictly handsome but you're so cute I could pick you up and hug you.]

Sulphur instinctively backed away deliberately and smirked, though it looked more like a good-willed smile on his innocent seal face. [Girls.] He muttered to himself. [Sul, I heard that!]

Sulphur the spheal seemed to blush. [How did you read my thoughts?]

[Dunno. Maybe you were thinking too loudly?] The spheal lapsed into silence. Gem tilted her head curiously. Seeing that her friend ignored her, she entertained herself by gazing at a certain brightly coloured object. Without warning, something white fired out of her mouth and snatched the object to her. Calming down, Gem Emerald saw that it was silk. Wurmple silk. She had just used string shot—a human using a pokemon move!

Suddenly, [Did you hear me say anything?]

The wurmple twittered around. [No. Why?]

[We can control where our thoughts are aimed. Just to ourselves, to a certain person, a certain group of people, or we can make it public speech, that everyone can hear.] The wurmple stared at the spheal's equally shiny eyes.

[Ooookkaay. Was that something we had to learn? Cuz I thought that was common sense.]

[Well, it wasn't common sense to me!]
A lightness glowing in his eyes assured her he wasn't the least bit offended by her little haughty remark. He was always a calmer person than her—one of his good traits.

At this thought, Gem instantly felt apologetic about her attitude. Wonder why I like offending people so much, even my closest friends. Luckily for her, she already gained control of her thought speak. Sulphur heard nothing.

[Well, what are we standing here for? Sul, let's go outside and try out our pokemon abilities!] Gem was so impatient, she slinked at top speed, which wasn't very fast to the door. Gathering pressure at her mouth, she threw up thick strands of string at the knob. She tugged. Nothing happened. [Great. I know how to pull but not how to turn a doorknob. Can we demorph and remorph outside?]

Once they were out, they hid in a corner and quietly changed back. Sul chuckled [Who would have thought a spheal and wurmple would be "hanging out" together like this?] Gem laughed in agreement. All of a sudden, her tail hurt. She looked at it: ice crystals were forming. Gem Emerald didn't hesitate any longer. With the spirit of a professional snow-baller, she unleashed her tough silk at Sulphur. But a multi-coloured beam immediately destroyed all her silk.

Gem was mad. [Sul! You not only used "icy wind" against me, you used "aurora beam"!]

    [Sure did!]
The spheal said playfully, too playfully.

Gem Emerald turned her caterpillar face away. [No fair. You should've played easy on me. I'm only a wurmple with very limited attacks] She sulked.

Sulphur Ice just laughed. [Come on, this is fun!] As he did so he hurled an ice ball at her.

[OW!] She poised her mouth to spin silk and threw this at the next approaching ice ball. Instead of stopping it, her silk merely slowed it down whilst it quickly gathered momentum. [Oww! Sul, my wurmple strings can't help protect me….stop it, you're hurting me!]

Now it was Sul's turn to be frightened. [I can't! "Ice ball" is a non-stop attack!]

    [WHAT?!]
Desperately, Gem Emerald slinked as fast as her long body could go. WHAM!! [Aaaahhh! Sul what on earth did you dooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!]

Sulphur Ice the spheal watched helplessly as his friend was sent hurtling through the air. Another mistake. Apart from being a continuous, uncontrollable attack, "ice ball" increased in power with an increasing number of hits. He tried to run to her, but unfortunately spheals weren't born cheetahs, or rather, born rapidashes in the pokemon world.

Poor Gem was literally flying through the air. [Yiiiiiikesss!!!….ouch!] She landed hard on a patch of grass. Grass was a soft surface, but still it hurt. Lots. Remind me never to be a wurmple again. Huh?

[Wurm…wurmple! Wurmple!] She couldn't believe her eyes, a herd of wurmples was charging towards her. [Hey, fellow wurmples, stop!……I may not sound like you but we are all a family! Stop in the name of the mother of all wurmples! (can wurmples take lame jokes?)]

Apparently that was no use. Gem Emerald gave up turned and ran, or rather crawled. Don't individuals of the same species look out for each other instead of attacking them?! But then she thought of World War 1 and 2fine, there was nothing unusual about wanting to kill off your own kind. She tried so desperately to crawl away she didn't hear a dreadful voice hollering,

"Wurmples! I found wurmples! Oh oh I want that one! Pokeball go!"

[Eeeek!] screamed Gem as she felt the pokeball strike her skin. Some kid is trying to capture me as if I were a pokemon. But she was a pokemon. Thankfully, the ball bounced off harmlessly.

"Oh no, it's getting away!" A flash of white light. "Pidgeotto, get it with 'peck' now!" Instantly something large, furry and scary came at her with daunting fierceness.

[Uhh, I am so pidgeotto prey! And I always thought they were cute!] [Ouch! My back hurts, stop stabbing me you horrible bird!] In her futile attempt to fight back, she shot out a stream of string…which the brown and white bird instantly dodged.

[Argh.] She couldn't demorph in front of another human either. Now what? She received one final sharp blow from the cruel bird's beak and collapsed, still conscious.

"Return Pidgeotto! Go Pokeball!" Again Gem heard the ominous sound of the red and white ball. As it hit her, Gem gaped in cold-sweat horror as she watched it open up and release a fatal flood of blinding light……

Her worm body was shrinking at such a rapid rate, that the fright from morphing was instantly reduced to nothing. With a final deathly power, the pokeball sucked her up and consumed her.
