The Legendary Beasts

The Japanese word for "bark" and "roar" are the same, so the "barking" mentioned in the Pokedex could very well be an understandable translation error.

The main problem with the Japanese language is that almost no word has a clear, definite meaning.
 
Well, when I first played Crystal, I was very gullible, and my friends called them Dogs. I guess it just stuck for me.

Although, I do call them beasts more than I call them Dogs now.

Nintendo Power's really not exactly a good source for canonical Pokémon info, though.

I dunno, they're pretty clearly based on big cats. Raikou's a tiger- that's clear as day, and anybody who disputes that is in a certain Egyptian river. Entei looks like a lion to me with the mane and all, and it always seems to be portrayed with a sort of regal bearing, as the lion is associated with royalty.

Suicune's the hardest one to identify, but it's probably a cheetah or leopard to go along with the other two. Think about it- every trio, with the exception of Hoenn's weather trio, are all based on one general idea:

Articuno/Zapdos/Moltres: Birds
Regirock/Regice/Registeel: Golems
Uxie/Mesprit/Azelf: Sprites/fairies/whatever you wanna call them
Dialga/Palkia/Giratina: Dragons

And even Rayquaza and co. are based off of Hebrew mythology (the Leviathan, Behemoth, and Ziz) so I really don't see why Pokémon, with its tendency to patterns, would randomly make two members of a trio based on one thing and the other one on another.

I still call them beasts anyway because it sounds cooler.

Also, adding to the list of things that also bark: prairie dogs.
 
How the suicune look like a lepord?!

I dunno, sure they do. :( Suicune just looks like an underfed one. They have the same build, really.
 
So? A lot of animals have spots. It's not exactly a rare fur pattern.

They've been dogs in name alone for me. It's just a common term like that, I guess. I've always known Entei was a lion. I just called the group dogs.

And the "twins" are Pixies.
 
Personally, I've always called them Legendary 'Beasts'.


Suicune → Wolf/Fujin (The Shinto god of wind from Japan, present at the creation of the world and wears leopard skin, being a read-headed black humanoid)
Entei → Aterui (Lord of Tamo in the region of Isawa from Japan)
Raikou → Raijuu (a mythological Japanese animal that is composed of Lighting/Fire and is usually in the form of a wolf/fox-like animal)


Really, the only one actually not based off of some kind of canine is Entei, who is based off of a god. If anything, they'd be best of being called 'Legendary Canines' if we're talking about the specific species of animal they're being based off of.


All of their names have something to do with emperors and aristocracy in general (kou (Raikou) = emperor/koutei (Entei) = emperor/kun (Suicune) = monarch). Perhaps they should be called The Legendary Aristocrats?


Of course, I still gotta go with The Legendary Beasts.​
