THE OFFICIAL NUZLOCKE CHALLENGE THREAD

If I want to do this challenge and post my progress here, do I have to follow all the rules (or at least the three important) in the first post of this thread?

I'd like to play with these rules:

a) If a pokémon faints, it's dead, release it.
b) Catch only the first pokémon encountered in each area.
c) No legendaries.
d) Nickname everyone.

The SET rule and the No Healing Outside Battles rule don't appeal to me... Is it ok? :3 (or should I quit whining and follow the rules already)

Alright, as promised, I finished my Sapphire Nuzlocke today. It became a bit later than expected because of some irl distraction, but here it is, the final update. It was incredibly close. So did I win?

MONDAYS SUCK'S WHALETASTIC SAPPHIRELOCKE FINALE

Yes, I actually decided to try the 6 Wailord thing. One, Alderic died while grinding to a Golbat that got an insane amount of hax, but I still got a full team up. The game gave me so many Wailmers, I felt like I was destined to lead them to glory.

So here is my team. The two remaining whales at the box were Murderer, which I refused to use, and another one with adamant nature.

I could easily afford, this Tumelo had gotten me about 20 nuggets in the immense grinding process, among other things.

Sidney was pretty easy. Most of his stuff died quickly, only the Shrifty annoyed me with Double Team spam. It did, however, have no grass moves, and Swagger helped me to OHKO it later with Strength, because I had all flutes.

I lost a lot of PP here, but apart from that no problem.

That damned Walrein. Tons of defenses and that damned Body Slam. Thankfully Sheer Cold didn't work becuase of me being level 54, or I would have lost Pokemon here.

Blizzard only missed once. Easy win.


Time for Steven.
Skarmory went down easily, but then suddenly:

What the hell?

Aggron then went down, and Cradily took its place.

And killed 2 of my whales before finally running out of Giga Drains and dying to Blizzards (they were amazingly accurate in this run, I had some luck there)

One dead Claydol later, it was Metagross time. I just barely failed to kill it, just to have it then....

...kill another 2 whales. It then went down while recharging, and I thought I had won.

...but then Steven sent out Armaldo. The thing that seem to get Ancientpowerhax in all of my runs.

This did, however not happen. It still did massive damage with Ancientpower, but in the end it died.

And, with my last Wailord, I enter the Hall of Fame.

HOLY CRAP OVER 80 HOURS

And the end. I finally did it. I actually won a Hoenn nuzlocke. So the third time WAS actually the charm.

The last survivor of these Elite 4 battles. Ava, who only joined the team after Alderic died an ugly grinding death. From Slateport city, the last area of my massive Wailmer fishing tour. Quite ironic, isn't it?
The other's movesets were the same by the way, they did have varied items though.

Special thanks go to Jimmie the Ninjask, Mauro the Exploud and the many, many others who made the somewhat gimmicky end of this run possible. A run with many ups and downs, and a great ending.

Nice one, mondays suck. As always, anything can happen in a nuzlocke. And I am glad you won. :-)

SOUL SILVER : TEAM OVERHAUL : ALMOST EVERYONE DIES

Okay, so, to start this update, I ditched Wings. Why ? Well, it seems worthless except for it status spam (and everyone wakes up in 2 turns anyways), so it's sitting as backup in the box.

As promised, I went to get Sudowoodo. DISASTER ALERT.
It was on the red, and asleep from Pedosnucks. The Shark (now named Loan Shark) was on the red, Bamf as well, and Wings was in the box. So, I try a Headbutt, which got in on a little red line (it didn't want to stay in Great Balls), and then, Rock Throw. A crit. hit, Pedosnucks has DIED. Ah, whatever. I got to catch him, but.... why do I keep on losing ??

South of Ecruteak, I encountered a Vulpix (^_^), which Roared away from me... (v_v). Damn. And I needed a Fire Type...

So, I go to Burned Tower (Headbutted a tree in Ecruteak for High Five the Ledyba, now in the box and accidentally killed a Headbutted Spearow east of Ecruteak), with my newest team mate, Psychomona the Kadabra, which replaces Pedosnucks.

I disposed of Silver easily, but then he sends out Bayleef. I counter with Bamf, but Peck and Poison Sting both do crappy damage, so I leer a little. Then, Bayleef is on the red and I totally forget about Overgrow... a CRIT. MAGICAL LEAF disposes of Bamf. Arghh... another death. You know what this means ? The only old member I have is.... Loan Shark. The rest are gotten after Goldenrod.

Stacking up some new Pokemon for my team : Juliet the Zubat from Mt. Mortar, Lanette the Meowth from west of Ecruteak. Final team after this shaky chapter :

Girl player Karissa starts the game and chooses Bulbasaur as her starter. Inexperienced as I am, I wouldn't do well with the fragile Charmander... and I'm tired of Squirtle, somewhat.
Bulba is male and named BAZO.

After a rather dumb fight against rival Thomas Charmander (Tackle!... Tackle!... Tackle! Oh no, Potion! *uses* Ok, now... Tackle!) they won and set off out in Kanto.

After the package-for-Oak event and getting the pokédex and pokéballs, they go out into the grass, eager to find their first teammate... it's a Pidgey!
Caught it, named it PATO.

In the next area, they find a Spearow, catch it and name it SITA. They immediately realize Pato and Sita have feelings for each other, oh my...

All goes well until... they stumble upon another pokémon in the same area. Karissa lets Pato battle somewhat on his own, as she turns her attention to other stuff, but suddenly... Pato is down. Because Karissa didn't keep her attention up!

Swearing, she goes on, grinding to make Sita stronger. Sita is grieving though... and Karissa is mad. And before they know it, Sita goes down too... from a Tackle from a mere Pidgey!

Karissa's rage knows no boundaries, and she is about to let Bazo finish the bird who killed her friend... but she realizes it's herself she should be mad with. She didn't care enough about her pokémon, and that killed them.

Calming down, she catches this Pidgey instead, and promises to take well care of it, to at least to some point pay for what she caused Pato and Sita.
Pidgey is named PEJO.

They go into Viridian forest and Karissa is eager to catch a Pikachu or... a Caterpie, which they encounter! Pejo is a bit shy and can't yet control his abilities, so he accidentally kills the Caterpie. Oops. No poké from the forest... Karissa remembers her promise to herself and doesn't get mad. Not... too much at least...

Finally out of the forest, they stumble into a patch of grass, only to find a Caterpie! Pejo gets another chance, and they catch it!
Caterpie is named CATO.

Pewter Gym was mainly Bazo whipping around his Vine Whip until every boulder before him had turned to dust. Badge get!

On the next route, Cato evolved a few times and become a hasty, energetic male Butterfree.

A little too energetic perhaps, because the Spearow they encountered outside Mount Moon was sorta killed by this bug. No Poké from this road...

Mount moon was a great training ground. And they caught Zubat, named ZYXE. He was trained throughout the cave and his Supersonic and Astonish were good weapons. Even though he was a bit annoying at first, the others soon began respecting him. If only a little.

Out from the cave, they walked into grass and found another Spearow. It was female, and reminded Karissa of Sita... in remembrance, she caught her, and named her SYCA. A promise like the one made to Pato was given to Sita's memory. Syca and Pejo would prosper.

In Cerulean, Misty was a pushover. She and her stars completely fell into the water when Bazo, now and Ivysaur, whipped them up. Badge get!

So... Karissa heard there was a bridge around here... onwards!
With a team of Ivysaur and... flying pokémon...?

In Vermilion I decided to trade SYCA for CH'DING the Farfetch'd. Syca seemed happy in her new home and Pejo and I took farewell. Ch'Ding was a nice new team member but I realized I'd have to choose between him and Pejo. There's only room for one bird on this team. After a few training sessions and battles where Ch'Ding had actually been very good... I chose Pejo. He's one of the first pokémon I caught, and my memory of Sita and Pato, who were the very first pokés I caught. BOXing Ch'Ding!

Got a few other new team members on the road, a notable one is MIKE the Meowth, who I started to love but lost in a stupid grinding battle. I'm still careless ;_______;

Another really notable member is DIPE the Diglett. I was raising him and he grew up so quickly and was so strong! And in the electric gym, a trainer's Pikachu got him. We were mad, and me and Bazo singlehandedly took down all of Lt. Surge's pokés. Badge get! But at a terrible cost... I'll miss Dipe, a lot.

It really bugs me that I have no time for these kinds of shenanigans right now T_T If I did, I'd take the Nuzlocke challenge in a heartbeat...

By the way, is anyone finding it too easy? ^^' If I were to take it (on any of R,S or E), these would be my rules:

1 - No pokemon that faints can be used again, it's dead.
2 - Catch only 1 pokemon per route - the first one you see.
3 - If you don't catch it - sorry, no pokemon.
4 - Can't use a pokemon until it's nicknamed.
5 - No trading, including ingame.
6 - Battle style SET.
7 - No healing items inside or outside of battle. Berries are permissible, though! This includes the league (!)
8 - No limit on pokeball purchasing or pokecentre use.
9 - Murder legendaries.
THE FOLLOWING RULES ARE NEW
10 - Bring EVERY POKEMON you have caught up to a set level before each gym leader (not including E4): levels 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 respectively. Any pokemon that are under the appropriate level when you get that badge are rendered unusable.
11 - Each pokemon can only be used against ONE gym leader (again, excluding E4). For example, if I used my Mudkip to whip Roxanne's ass, it can't show up in any other leader battle until the E4.

I'm hoping 10 would encourage me to try and use pokemon I wouldn't otherwise; if I really hate them, I can just leave them alone anyway. 11 is for main-team variety. They kind of complement each other, but I'm not 100% sure if they should be used together...

I said a few pages back that I'd be doing a Moemon Fire Red Omega nuzlocke, unfortunately the RNG hates me so I've decided I'll try another rom hack, Pokemon Platinum Enhanced.

Rules:
Catch the first pokemon encountered on each route (Encounters before I recieve pokeballs don't count)
Must kill all Legendaries
If a pokemon faints it is dead, it must be released/permanently boxed.
Nickname all pokemon
Battle mode: set

And just for an extra challenge...No using items vs Team Galactic members, a normal trainer mightn't stop you calling a pokemon back for a potion, but the resident evil organisation? I somehow doubt it.

Hadn't realised it had swords dance. After 2 Swords dances I decided I'd just try to stall and let poison kill it. So Saur switched back in...and took 5 damage from a twice SD boosted Acid...yeah.

Started my own challenge today on a Gold rom (that would be my Common Level, Team Replacement Nuzlocke run)!

Update 1:

Named myself Salazar.
Chose Totodile as my starter, nicknamed him Maul, appropriately I think.

Took him out to get the egg and the Dex from Mr. Pokemon, busted route 29 ( :t016: popped out before I could catch pokemon) and 30 ( :t011: on the 2nd-to-last patch of grass, argh). By the time Elm had the egg, Maul had grown to level 10 and beaten Franco (my rival) and his :t152: .
With balls and dex, I went out to get myself something on route 31.
Beat up a few trainers and caught myself a :t016: . Called it Hedge. Ground until it was level 12.

Wanted something from Sprout Tower on my team, but Maul accidentally killed the :t019: I came across. Damn. I needed at least 3 pokemon on my team against one gym leader, by my rules. So I went through the gate back on route 29 up to route 46 and nabbed a :t021: . Called it Impaler, after Vlad the Impaler.
Ground it up to level 12 in Sprout Tower, it owned those Bellsprout lovers ^^.

Hoping to get a fourth pokemon (and having forgotten about Dark Cave >.<), Salazar ran down to the Ruins of Alph in order to catch an Unown and use it up in the first gym :> (only one gym battle per poke, remember). The :t140: puzzle done, he fell into the ruins and then promptly killed his first (and only) :t201: with an overpowered Peck from Impaler the :t021: . Ouch.

So, Maul, Hedge and Impaler took on Falkner themselves. In fact, my birds took out the Gym Trainers, while Maul spammed Water Guns for the Leader Battle kill.
The Zephyrbadge is mine!
By the end of it, my team was level 13.

Obtained the egg from the aide in Violet City (so that's my pokemon for Violet...) and hatched it quickly into a :t175: , which I nicknamed Garotte (why not?). Decided to grind that useless little thing until it learned an attacking move - got it to learn Metronome at lv 7 (yay!).

But then, on route 31, disaster struck.

At level 9, Garotte was grinding happily away, killing things with random 'Nomed attacks, when suddenly it came up against a Bellsprout - and Selfdestructed!!!
Aaaargh! Suicidal Togepi is deeead : (
I guess I should have anticipated that; it's my fault poor little Garotte has passed away. She will be missed.

Awesome stuff, though Wounder had a close run-in at level 11 when its Rock Throw missed twice against a :t069:, whose Vine Whip brought Wounder down to 2 HP. And there was that time when Wounder was poisoned by a :t167: ... but the PokeCentre was near so she wasn't really in danger.
I'm not using any heal items other than held berries, by the way.

I was gonna need at least 2 more new pokes to take on Bugsy.

With route 32 now open, I was hoping for a Wooper, or perhaps a Mareep - both interesting and useful guys. I walked hopefully into the grass and was met by:

Ground Maim the Rattata to lv 15 like everyone else. Hyper Fang pwns everything. Then I got lucky - I'd forgotten the Old Rod was in the Centre down by the entrance to Union Cave :D Took that and nabbed a Karp in Cherrygrove (the only place I hadn't got anything from yet, heheh :p). Level 10, named Wrath. Great, Splash only -.- Ground it up to lv 15 and then started spamming Tackles on route 32 - Wrath actually murdered everything it came across o.O Scary stuff. Karps aren't unusably bad (hides from flames). Tackle, tackle, tackle, tackle, lv 20 - Gyarados yeeeeeah!!! Free awesome pokemon, I love that. The rest of my team hovered around lv 16-17:

And to think I once saw a shiny Geodude there in Crystal... sigh. Still, at least my team is still in one piece - heavy grinding helps (and is easier with the Speed button ^^'). So, just to even things out, I slew a horde of bats 'n' rats to get all my pokes up to lv 20.

See what I can sniff out in Azalea woods/Boot out the Rockets/Kill Bugsy. Probably double up the rats, 'cause once I've used a single Rattata/Raticate, I can't use that entire species in a gym battle again. Might as well make them both useful. Sorry but challenge failed.Clair has mashed and bashed my team.Even with my new Mamoswine,I also lost ALL of my water types to grinding and even if I beat Clair I wont be able to move on because I fished/Surf on all routwes to get more Water and they still died.I feel like Monday's during his Surf scenario.

Because I'd prefer to save Wounder and Wrath for Whitney, I wanted a fourth pokemon to send out against Bugsy (4 is the minimum per gym if you have at least that many unused pokes). Went looking around in Ilex Forest, and found the amazingly rare:

No surprises there, then - called it Creeper and raised it up to lv 20 on route 33. I was ready to take on the rockets.

But while my team was clearing out Slowpoke Cave, I was unfortunately ambushed by a:

Nicknamed my new female bat Puncture, and (obviously) went and raised it up to lv 20 on route 33 (I'm predictable, so what). Killed Franco (my Rival) along the way. Since I now had 2 Zubats and 2 Raticates, I decided to save Creeper as well and just take on Bugsy with my two pairs.

The gym trainers were easy kills, though a Paras managed to incapacitate Puncture with Paralysis; so I took on Bugsy with 3 pokes and a cripple.
Metapod died quickly to Leech's Bites; Scyther, though, scared her off by Fury Cutting her into orange health. Maim came in and Hyper Fanged that Scyther into oblivion, after it foolishly switched to Quick Attack. Kakuna deserves no comment.

Quick update, I'll drop the summary format next update...

Deposited Shrooms, withdrew Skye, Quackers and Rocky.
Taught Rocky Rock Smash and got my grind on!
Rocky died to a Zubat during the grind...dammit.
Taught Quackers Rock Smash
Headed back to Jubilife. Battled the Galactic Grunts, Draco wiped the floor with them. (Dragon Rage is now off-limits until the enemies can reasonably be expected to have at least 41HP)
Went north to Floroama Town
Caught Ponyta (Silver) at the Valley Windworks
Did some more grinding.
Booted Team Galactic out of the Windworks. But at what cost...
Saur got KO'd by Raticate, Monty avenged him, but was nearly KO'd by Umbreon. Quackers switched in and proved her awesomeness overcoming confusion and infatuation 2 turns in a row to win the fight.
Dammit Saur, I knew I shouldn't have lead with you...you were underleveled...I'm sorry.
*sigh* Boxed Saur and headed North towards Eterna Forest. On the way, caught Shellos (Sheldon) on route 205.

Having second thoughts about some of the challenge rules. Seriously contemplating reducing the required number of pkmn per gym to 3 when combined with Nuzlocke, as the number of areas I can catch things from is around 18, with 5 gyms ahead. Not good.
So - REDUCED REQUIRED TEAM NUMBER TO 3.
