The Kanto episodes are in a different league than the Hoenn episodes, and I don't just mean in terms of the final conferences. With the first season, everything was delightfully wild and often insanely surreal. Plus, there were blatant examples of Japanese culture everywhere, which gave the show a great foreign feel (which only makes sense). It was the time before the Japanese producers knew that the show would be coming to America, and basically had zero restrictions or guidelines from an outside dubbing company. Naturally, Season 1 episodes like "The Ghost of Maiden's Peak", "The Tower of Terror", "Electric Soldier Porygon", "Mystery at the Lighthouse", "Island of the Giant Pok?mon", "Showdown in Dark City", and "Holy Matrimony" are often undeniably Japanese and, even more often, borderline unhinged. Nowadays, 4Kids' restrictions on how much Japanese culture can be in an episode has reduced the storylines to being barely unique, more along the lines of plots you could find on several American cartoon series. Heck, they don't even allow Japanese writing anymore. Hoenn is good, but Kanto is better - back when the show was allowed to be Japanese before anything else.
