Chapter 6 – Execution
For the rest of the day, I slept alongside Marisa in her room. Even with my protests, she pleaded to have the cuffs around her. Four for each limb and the fifth one going around her neck like a collar. I also found out that the keys the woman had given me worked for her cuffs, so I could take them off whenever I saw fit. Once I awoke, I saw immediately that Marisa had cuddled up against me, so I couldn't walk out. Sighing, I checked my watch. Nine o'clock in the morning. I groaned silently, and rubbed my face. We had slept for longer than expected. I looked down at Marisa's small figure, and nudged her shoulder slightly. Immediately she sat up with eyes wide; on full alert. I chuckled at this. "It's alright…They're not here yet. See? I didn't do a single thing to you while you slept. Now can you trust me?" I propped my right leg up to my body, and leaned my right arm on it as I looked at the golden girl. She had not spoken since addressing her room.
She nodded slowly after a pause, and scratched as her cuffs. I had realized late that night that the cuffs were like suction cups. My wrist was still sore from trying out the cuff.
"Alright…" I began unsurely, looking at her with raised eyebrows. "So, why are these scientists doing these things to you? And what the heck are up with those wings?" I peered at her back, and saw the metal wings closed tightly against her body. She flinched, and moved slightly away from me. I frowned in response. She barely trusted me.
"U-um….Bern-sama said…Said that they had permission from the Q-queen, so….As long as they don't um…Hurt me really bad, they can test things on me…And these wings?" She slowly opened them up, and glanced behind her back. "Um…"
"Okay…Who's this Queen person? And who is this Bern-sama? Is it one of the scientists?" I cocked my head curiously at Marisa, and pulled an apple from beside me. I tossed it to Marisa with a sincere smile.
"T-the Queen is the woman that put me in here because…Because I'm dangerous, and I hurt an important person. Bern-sama is Bernkastel-sama. She's my only friend!" She took a huge bite from her apple, and chewed between words. "Bern-sama isn't a white coat. She was banned from seeing me a few years ago."
My eyes narrowed. Now I was even more confused. I only knew one Queen, and that was Queen Scarlet of the country. She was a rather kind-hearted person, even though her parents died in a fire not long ago. Was she talking about that Scarlet? No way! What was really bothering me is that this Queen decided that a girl under puberty was dangerous. What the heck was this world coming to…? "How are you dangerous? You're just an innocent little girl with nasty scientist creeps poking needles in you…"
I watched as she finished her apple before replying, and my own stomach growled. Note to self; get more food. "Umm…That is….Well; the scientists grafted these wings into me after…" She paused to swallow, and look away sadly. "…After ripping out my old wings."
My eyebrows rose, and I looked at her with a face of total disbelief. "Uh…Were they made of plastic or something?" I was rewarded with a pouted face from Marisa.
"No! They were real wings! The ones I was born with! They took them off, and put these ugly things on me so I can't use my magic! I'm a demon!" She cried, tears forming in her eyes. I twitched, and slid myself away from her. Not so much innocent than crazy! Well, I'd be crazy too in this situation…
"Yeah, and I'm an angel come to rescue you. Are you lying to me?" I snorted a laugh, but Marisa continued to cry.
"It's true!! I can prove it! Promise!" She shouted out, holding out her arms to me. I sighed and undid her cuffs so she could walk around.
"Fine…Let's see this dark magic, then."
Marisa nodded seriously, and stood up. I stood as well, and followed her as she left her room and back into the awful science lab. What the heck was she going to do? Poke some mystery drug into her so she grew horns?
She ran over to a computer I had been looking over the previous day, and pointed at it. "Use that key you have! Then I can activate my magic and show you!" She was determined, I'll give her that. Too bad I was going to be the one to crush her dreams of being a mythical demon. After finding the correct key and slot, I inserted the key and clicked the computer to life. Instantly, the color drained from my face.
The screen had come to life within seconds of inserting the bronze key and already what it showed startled me. I leaned in hesitantly for a better look as Marisa scrolled through the screen. Whoever had used the computer last, had left their work open, and according to Marisa's ecstatic behaviour, it was exactly what she needed.
The window that was open consisted of three parts. The top left part was what Marisa was scrolling through. It was a list of something, but it was obviously not a list of names because my eyes caught a "Fire Sign: Summer Red". On the top right was a perfect 3-D diagram of Marisa, complete down to every detail. The final bottom section seemed to be a list of statistics. My face took on a puzzled look as Marisa smiled and clicked something on the screen before I could see what it was. She backed away from the computer with the same smile and raised her right arm so it was crossed against her chest. "Light Sonic."
I didn't know if I was hallucinating, but Marisa soon confirmed what I was seeing was real. Coming straight from the skin atop her wrist was a narrow sword that came out a bit past her hand. It was sharp, as it easily cut Marisa's finger just by sliding it a few inches and already drawing blood.
Last time I checked, pointed swords did not grow from a six-year-olds wrist on cue.
I stared at her wrist with extreme curiously. "So…Y-you really aren't human…" I breathed, looking at her face which had a dazzling smile plastered on. This small, cute little girl was a demon? Didn't demons have horns, and they lived in the underworld? Actually, there was nothing really confirming where I was. Was I still on Earth or…?
Comparing this real demon with the human scientists, I began to think how ironic this was. Demons should be the ones delivering Hell to humans, not the other way around. Suddenly I was relieved that I had befriended her, and she had not tested out her sword on me.
An abrupt melody coming from the computer startled us both enough to jump on guard. Marisa took on a serious expression as she peered at the screen, and I began to wonder if she could cut through the computer screen. The screen had changed, and showed that whoever was logged on had gotten a new e-mail. The same person who had left their work unattended had also forgotten to log off. I rolled my eyes at their stupidity, and read the text appearing on-screen. Sure enough, I quickly learned who the stupid one was; Kuze. He had gotten an e-mail marked priority by an unknown sender. It was rude of me to even read that far, but hey! The guy was careless enough not to sign out, so it meant he wasn't expecting anything important. The contents of the message said otherwise, and Marisa's face turned pale as she let out a terrified whimper. She had read the contents, and she had a terrified look on her sickly face, and she curled up on the floor holding her ears tight. She looked traumatized. I blinked, and quickly skimmed through what she had read, to see why she was acting so.

To: Kuze of Science Lab Eleven
From: Unknown Sender
Marked: High Priority; Must Read (Unopened)
Greetings from your Queen.
Hello, Kuze. No time no hear nor see. I'm hoping you have left Marisa alive and in one piece for me? I have come to inform you that she will be marked for execution on this coming Friday. So, I hope you have figured a way to take back her powers. Or have you been goofing off like last time I came down? Understand that your life is counting on this being a success. But, just to make sure she is executed on time and with the proper amounts, I am sending one of my loyal servants by the name of Yukari to watch your team do their work. Mess up, or try anything funny and I'll make sure it's the last thing you do. Remember what happened to your grand-daughter? I think your body will be an excellent snack for my wolves.
End.

No matter how many times I re-read the e-mail, I got the same result popping into my head. Today was Wednesday…Two days and it would be Friday. Did she mean this Friday? Or the next?
Marisa was going to be executed.
I stepped away from the computer and knelt down beside the crying Marisa. Her eyes were wide with disbelief, and her jaw was shuddering as she tried to hold back the tears. Her tears left streaks down her dirty face, and they ran down her red throat from the cuff. "Shhh…." I whispered, rubbing her back slowly to calm her. I began to wish that I had read the e-mail first, so she didn't read it herself. She was already traumatized enough, and now she knew her future held only death and pain for the next two days. I felt my own eyes become glassy as I watched the little girl shake her head and continue to weep. I had only just met her, but within the time I had been with her, demon or not, I had grown to love and pity this girl. She did not deserve this. "I…I wish I could take your place Marisa, but…" I paused as she looked up at me after un-cupping her hands from her face. Her face was innocent and messy, and I frowned. I was surely going to regret the words I was thinking of, but I whispered them quietly into her small ear as I held her tight. "I'll save you, Marisa. I'll get you out of here, and you can live with me."
For the rest of the day, I slept alongside Marisa in her room. Even with my protests, she pleaded to have the cuffs around her.
