Every once in a while the show has a truly great battle on it. So this thread is to debate what the single greatest battle is.

    the setup

    battle: who was it between
reason: why do you think it was the best?
convince: convince readers that it is the best by giving a breif summary of the battle or telling us how it ended or what made this battle stand out to you

    here is my entry

battle: Gary vs. Ash in the silver conference
reason: Because Ash finally beat Gary and it devolped Ash as a character. Also because you actually get to see Gary battle a full battle and find out alot about him.
convince: Ash tried to use raw power instead of his usually tatic of just using random pokemon and hoping for the best and getting just plain luck. He was losing and charizard turned it around, charizard got alot of screen time and showed he was one of ash's strongest pokemon and proving that charizard is a loyal pokemon after all and i just loved seeing his heracross in action for once and pikachu was not used!!! I think this battle will go down in pokemon history as one of Ash's most memorable victories

    Hall of fame:
Beware of Dark Lugia - Ash vs. Maylene. I am impressed by the way you debated Gary vs. Ash and the way you defended yours well done and i have to agree that is a pretty good battle >.<

Well, since this is a debate I'll tear down your battle. XD

How does it develop his character? If anything, the days leading up to the battle did. Also, tell me what you found out about him during the battle, besides his pokémon. :P

Fisrt of all, Charizard proved his loyalty after Ash saved him from dying in the Orange Islands (what a sad day that was....). Also, most of that battle wasn't very good, the only one I remember was Charizard vs Blastoise. But I do agree with the Pikachu comment.

    As for me:

    Battle: Ash vs Maylene

Reason: Well, first of all in this battle we got to see many things that we wouldn't normally see in a normal battle. In the episode before this, we got to see Ash use Staravia with it's new attack, an awesome Buizel vs Lucario battle that ended as many people would've thought it should've ended, and a great use of attacks that we don't get to see.

Convince: I think that I was convincing in my Reason section. But I'll try here. The first thing that makes this battle a winner was the Buizel and Lucario battle. Using the rain, after blowing up a hole in the ceiling, was a great touch. Water Pulse and Pocus Palm were also excellently used here. Staravia was used well here too, along with Meditite. These days, we get to see these pokémon shafted but got to shine in this battle. Drain Punch and Detect, two attacks we rarely see anymore, were nice touches to go along with Staravia's Brave Bird. During both of these battles, we got to see the pokémon tire from using powerful attacks such as these and from fighting tough opponents. Chimchar and Machoke also had great battles, seeing attacks that we don't see a lot either such as Cross Chop and Dig, even though that is becoming common.

The only one I can think of now is May vs. Drew in the Kanto Grand Festival finale.

Beware you made some good points and I will agree that the episodes leading up to the battle did develop him more, but I think that the battle with Gary showed us that Ash isnt as bad of a trainer as we think at times and he really does improve. We learn the type of battler Gary is more than we do about him as a person but i still think that just this one battle made Gary a much more real character in the plot instead of an ongoing joke or whatever and since he lost it showed us a different side of Gary normally before the battle every time we saw him in the show he was talking about a recent victory or somehow besting Ash or when he was talked about it made him seem unstoppable like he had mega powered pokemon or something.

Ash vs. Maylene was an awesome battle but I think that Ash and his new pokemon are still getting used to things in this one, whereas in Gary vs. Ash they used pokemon that they had been with for a while making it a much better overall battle on both sides, but back to your battle i will admit the battle was intense and one of my favorite gyms to date, no it had to be my favorite i will concede defeat here Ash's greatest gym battle was that one but i still liked Gary vs. Ash more

Well everyone has their opinions but the battle still seemed a bit weak. Gary didn't show up that many times in Johto, so his appearance was a bit unexpected. Even in Kanto he was not sen that many times so he was never included in the plot that much. He was more of a person that was seen to be better than Ash. This is a reason why a lot of people like Paul, he is actually more tied in Ash's story, just like how Zoey is for Dawn. But if I had to choose, this would surely be in the Top 3 battles in Johto for me. So I agree wit that much.

Ok you bring up a good point Gary isn't much of a character up until that battle, but that is what makes it so great you finally meet Gary for real no holding back although the battle coulda been better what the battle meant for the show was much more important than the battle itself. I hope you get that lol it sounded much clearer in my head

I didn't like Gary vs Ash much, it was mostly quick 1 or 2HKOs until Blastoise vs Charizard, where it starts to get really good

You bring up a good point the Blastoise vs. Charizard thing was cool but i think it dragged a bit, you have to consider most pokemon fans are younger and can not sit through long drawn out battles like older fans want to see so they just make 2 pokemon duke it out for about 10 minutes lol

Don't worry, I was able to understand you. :D

Well, Heracross vs Magmar wasn't a 1 hit-KO fest. Even though it was very cheap. XD

I would like to see another Gary battle but longer and with more action also but I still say it was one of the best moments in the show when Ash beat Gary. Honestly I would love to see a tourney with all of the old and new trainers with longer battles but the younger fans wouldnt enjoy so for now i guess its all in my head lol

    Well..
    Battle: Ash vs. Lance
Reason: An 6 vs 6 against one of the strongest trainers
Convince: The battle was exciting and a fun to watch, eventually Ash won so that's almost a miracle :p
