    [PokeCommunity.com] The Special Stat

In Red, Blue, and Yellow, there is a stat known simply as "Special". This stat is used to calculate the damage done to a target by special attacks, as well as the amount of damage received from being hit by special attacks. Then in 2nd gen, this stat was split into two separate stats, known as Special Attack and Special Defense (however, they were still both calculated from the same "special" IV). The Special Attack and Special Defense remain as individual stats to this day.

What are your thoughts on the original special stat? Do you feel that it made the games unbalanced in any way? Are there any Pokemon that you feel are particularly advantaged by it? How about the split? Do you think that it was a good decision to split them into two separate stats in Gen 2?

It was certainly unbalancing, to say the least. Pokemon with a high Special stat could shrug off moves that dealt with the Special stat with ease and do a lot of damage themselves at the same time. Since a lot of Psychic types had a high Special stat... yeah. There's two main reasons Psychic was so overpowered in Gen I, and the Special stat is one of them.

Chansey in particular was particularly affected by the Special split, as it was a semi competent special attacker back in RBY. Its high Special stat meant it could use moves like Ice Beam pretty effectively, and it had a lot of bulk so it could be hard to deal with. Of course that changed with the Special spit... I think there were other Pokemon affected by it but Chansey was the one that came to mind.

It's also worth mentioning that the Special stat has an unintended use as well, as the Special stat of the Pokemon that gets copied by Ditto while using the Ditto Glitch determines what wild Pokemon or trainer you run into. It also I think determines some other things pertaining to glitches but I can't remember what they are.

it made alakazam horrifyingly strong as well as gengar and dragonite. it was for the best they split the stat in two.
