I have started watching Series 1 again and something has been sort of bothering me. You see, every episode, Team Rocket come, and getm 'blasted off' after about 5 minutes. The thing is, everyone knows that the arent going to get Pikachu.

I was thinking, would it have been better to have TR building up their plan bit by bit throughout the whole series and often getting the better of Ash, making it seem as though there actually is a chance they could win, making the series more exciting and unpredictabe. Then at the and of the series, there could have been a huge climatic battle that Ash wins.

    Objection! >_>

Team Rocket's purpose is, purely, comedy relief. They aren't real villians, they're wannabe bad guys and blithesome antagonists. The fact that their goal is to actually capture Pikachu is for amusement and adds to the show; watching them plan (knowing that the plan will never work) is comical. Even when they do manage to get the upper hand and capture Pikachu, its only for story change and hilarity, because that is Team Rocket's purpose.

I say leave the heinous deeds up to the rest of Team Rocket, Team Aqua, and Team Magma, as that is their place within the series. If Team Rocket ever grew a brain and became serious then it would defeat their purpose and cause a imbalance.

    Psycho

    Like psycho said it's for comedy.The're wanna-bes'.

    I think its two fold.

Sighs, I do think the writers like to abuse our trio because they are villains plus all writers like punching bags (I do think Satoshi has a near sadistic pleasure from electrocuting them so much. I know the rat does), especially since they won't bother with the "real" villains on this series for some reason or another.

That and in the recent two seasons, I think they are the sole reason why the show is salvagable because frankly, the writing is terrible and can't carry without them. I don't care for the twerps or the filler character's/Pokemon's dilemma but at least the Rocket trio can spice things up and when you see episodes like the Seviper/Zangoose rivalry one, the Clamperl shell one, or the Tate/Liza GL battle, you're rather grateful for having them around.

That said, they are the most popular characters on the show as well, I do think the fanbase would go with them if they retired. I wish they did, to write more serious like Pokemon Special but yeah.

It would clearly make the plot more exciting. The whole "blasting-off" thing does kind of old.An improvement in each episode would actually bring some suspense into the plot, therefore, not bore any of the viewers O-o

But like two people have said before. It's meant as comedy~

I agree with Psycho sort of. They are purely there for comic relif, always have and always will. Thats the way it should be, since the show can't really survive with them, or without thier comic appearance. But I do think it would be nice if they had one episode where they suceed, but then the next episode the twerps find them and win once again. I would think though, that if Team Rocket ever won it would be only at the end of the series, as a sort of final installment. Other than that, they are the main humour in the show, and they should stay that way (almost all the funny gags come from them now... the twerps used to do it alot at the beginning too, but lost somewhere in the middle, so now its only Team Rocket... which makes us need them).

I would like to see the Rocket Trio become more serious but they are just there for the funny. If you want and evil Team Rocket then look at Butch and Cassie. They are the real evil part of Team Rocket.

It does seems like they are there to waste time like in the Liza and Tate gym battle but they there to give some relief from the main action. It would be nice to see a evil Rocket Trio but we just got to be satifie with what we get.

There are some some episodes where Jessie, James and Meowth had their moments like Is That a Ralts I Hear? and ZigZag Zangoose where they are shining a lot. I think other may give you mre titles but there are also PokeSpecails where they are honored like Training Daze and We're No Angels

Hmmmm i doubt it , renember those scenes where James try to figure out the name of Butch? It's really funny and it's make fun of him  but yes sometimes there are evil , but comparing them to Freeza from DBZ , there are more like the humour Vilians not the TRUE Vilians.

Well maybe they should be evil , if they learn from someone , but now? There are consired a Foolish Vilians to me

BTW maybe is the fact that the anime is lighthearted than the game? Since i don't renember that some Team Rocket kills Pokemon in the Anime

They've really gone downhill with Team Rocket. I haven't seen the last few months of the show (due to KidsWB not existing here), but from what I've seen of AG (or whatever crap 4Kids came up with for the title of Hoenn), they're doing really poor right now. Now in the series it's:
    Show up.
Motto (always the classic one it seems now, they forget to spice it up lately apparently).
Blast off in less then two minutes.
Sometimes, repeat (pretty bad when they can go through Team Rocket three plus times in one episode, except maybe in the Zapdos episode where it was the main Team Rocket joke that they broke their blasting off record).

I remember the old seasons when they commonly would be or directly caused the main conflict. And Meowth was the top cat!

But now...now...now they're just a tired out 3 minute joke. They don't even have Smokescreen anymore! They're not Team Rocket without Smokescreen! As much as I like Seviper, Jessie and James losing Arbok and Weezing was the worst idea ever! It's like Ash losing Pikachu! Or Misty and Brock losing Togepi, Staryu, Onix, and Geodude...oh wait, they did, another horrible move in my opinion. Back on track, it's not Team Rocket without their smoggy escapes (we can see it really hurts their performance). even with Seviper's Haze (rarely used too), it's not the same.

Butch and Cassie aren't evil evil but if you want a evil Rocket group then they what yo get. I mean I would asy The Boss but he rarely does anything and if he does make an apperance it just to talk and never anything else. He like battle only a few times but only to show off. Mewtwo.

True that they don't use the Smokescreen as much as before now it is haze which isn't use that much too. I guess they try to change them up a bit so that why they got a pokemon that knew haze to replace Weezing's Smokesceen but in order to match's Jessie's attack aura they made it one of Team Rocket's heavy attackers. It more like a choice: Attack to escape and protect or hide for cover in a smokescreen that will be blown away by Swellow or some others pokemon. It for a nice litle change of pace. I mean in the olden days you knew what was going to happen.

    Weezing use Smokescreen.
Ash sends out Noctowl to blow the smoke away or something like that.
Jessie goes with Arbok to attack.
Ash sends out Pikachu to attack and blast them off.

    Now in AG.

    Jessie sends out Serviper
Ash sends out a pokemon to battle.
    Battle.
    Rockets go blasting.

Sometimes we get a Haze to hid but not all the time.

Basically to change the show a bit in the AG season like Ash not using this other pokemon except Pikachu.
