Hello,
I've been playing pokemon on and off since elementary schoo, I'm 24 now. I started with red/blue/yellow, then started really getting into the TCG late elementary through seventh grade. I've always gotten the new games, but only recently started back up with the TCG with my son. I blew about 150$ online for two elite trainer boxes, and a 36 booster pack box.
Being an older, more mature gamer, I've always wanted something more involved than the top down-jrp 'kiddie' game.
So I started thinking about the possibilities of an open world, sandbox rpg set in the pokemon universe. It would feature Kanto to begin with, as well as all pokemon native to the region. Further expansions would release subsequent regions, complete with their native pokemon.
The game starts with your eyes opening, blinking and blurry you look around your room. You hear your mother calling your name from down stairs. You slowly get up and a tutorial prompt tells you that you should probably get dressed. It tells you how to access your dresser and how to collect items from a container. It then tells you how to acces inventory and equip items.
After that, you head downstairs, and your mother approaches you all enthusiastic, reminding you that today is the day you are going to the professor for your first pokemon. Just then someone knocks on the door and your mother moves off to answer it. It's your friend! He's also excited and prompts you to hurry along with him to the professor.
You follow your friend to the professor and after the usual long winded introduction (:P) you get to chose a pokemon, but get this: not from a pokeball on a convienent table. Instead, there is an enclosure with a whole bunch of different baby pokemon. He's trying to adopt these orphans out, so allows you to take one. You chose a Magby, and the professor gives you the "fill pokedex" speech. You get ready for the sequence to fight your buddy and his chosen pokemon, but then your rival butts in and takes over the match. You guys fight and he goes on about seeing you again.
Fighting would be interesting. It could go one of two ways, I imagine. First way would be sort of like 'channeling' in other games, where your trainer goes immobile and you take over 1st/3rd person control of the pokemon, and hold it so long as the trainer isn't being affected by anything. Second option could simply allow the pokemon to attempt to attack each other with basic attacks (fists/kicks/headbuts) whatever if feasible for their anatomy. Special attacks like fireballs, spurts of water, bolts of electricity, ect. would be controlled by you from the side by a pop up, this would be useful for controlling more than one pokemon at once. Or it could be a combination of both! It would make all battles very interesting.
A pidgy fighting a hitmochan for example would lead to the pidgy flying around out of reach and diving down to peck or scratch at the hitmochan - he'd have to attempt to hit the pidgy out of the air or what have you. Taking control of the pokemon yourself would allow a directional double tap to dodge. your mouse clicks could be basic attacks such as with a bulbasaur: a headbut or tackle on left mouse button, and vinewhip on right mouse button. While q and e could be special attacks such as bulbasaur's seed bomb and razor leaf. These abilities will be able to be changed through training/tms/hms or what have you.
You need but watch the anime's or play the games to see all the different quests, tasks, and minigames could be included. Beauty competitions, the treat baking, and obsticle course type things where you control your pokemon.
The possibilies are endless, and it would fit in beautifully with the sandbox rpg. There could be overarching questlines for each region, with major side quests of getting all the gym badges and competing in the leagues.
Anyways, I'll shut up so I can see what you all think about it. Thanks for reading.
Cheers,
Michael
