Kanto (FR/LG, R/B/Y)
Pros- The map is very well laid out, and you can complete the last four cities at basically whatever pace you wish. The starters are solid as well, as are the wild Pokemon selection throughout the region. Also, Team Rocket is excellent in the game, being both evil and reasonably strong. You are able to grab every single type in the game.
Cons- If Charmander is chosen as starter, first two gym leaders can be horrendously difficult, if Charmander is NOT chosen as a starter, you have to wait until pretty late in the game to get a Fire Type, if you don't want a Growlithe. The gym leaders in Fuschia, Saffron, Cinnabar, and Viridian are too weak, and all of them have relatively same leveling.
Finally, there is a huge gap between the levels of Pokemon between Viridian Gym and Victory Road. I was able to crush the last few gym leaders, but was outleveled by WILD Pokemon by the time I reached Victory Road.
Johto (G/S/C, HG/SS)
Pros- Best map layout of them all, the inclusion of Kanto is enormous plus. Starters are even more solid in this game. The Rival is great. Gym Leaders pose serious challenges as do the elite four, champion, and final battle against the previous game's protagonist. Day/Night setup and Radio help make this game more unique out of the series. Team Rocket is also in the game, helping make things a teensy bit more interesting.
Cons- Rival does not appear nearly enough, and is not leveled high enough in most cases. Team Rocket is on the whole, weaker and lacking in terms of back story. Kanto region can be monotonous and under leveled. Wild Pokemon layout in both regions can also be monotonous consisting of too many Kanto Pokemon and not enough new additions.
Hoenn (R/S/E)
Pros- Better Wild Pokemon Layout, including most Hoenn Pokemon and way less Pokemon of other regions. Gym Leaders are interesting, and the additions of puzzles and traps to gyms also improves things. The Battle Frontier is a definite improvement in Emerald.
Cons- The gym leaders and trainers in this region, although more numerous, are under leveled and very weak. The Elite Four is more difficult then the Champion, who is worse in Emerald then is R/S. The game's music is terrible and both teams Magma and Aqua are given pathetic storylines and Pokemon. The region, at times, can be confusing to an extreme.
Sinnoh (D/P/Pt)
Pros- Best wild Pokemon layout of them all! Gym Leaders are very challenging, as are trainers. The game has a great selection of Pokemon, and Fire Types can be nabbed early on. The starters are great, also. The game has an awesome storyline which utilizes characters such as the rivals, professors, and Dawn/Other Guy as well as Cyrus and Team Galactic to an extreme. Gym Leaders are more three dimensional characters now as well, as they are given appearances outside of the gym and better back stories. This goes for the majority of the elite four as well. Routes and caves are exciting, containing new terrain and better trainers and wild Pokemon. The Battle Frontier and storyline after the E4 is stellar, giving you opportunities to catch a large number of new and old legendaries, and to battle Team Galactic again as well. Wi-Fi Battling also gives you infinite possibilities after the long storyline has been completed.
Cons- Not very many cons. Some of the new additions to the game are bad ideas on the whole, and features such as the GTS, contests, and Honey trees seem like bad ideas on the whole. The Underground is also sometimes boring. Not being able to battle randoms makes getting into WiFi battling difficult, and less rewarding of an expierience.
