I just revisited SwSh and I LOVED it the second time around. I think the negativity on the Internet kind of killed it the first round for me. But, it was really good! I love Lionel and Paul (the brothers, this is their names in the Spanish version), a lot of Pokemon are super cool (Corviknight is majestic and I love the Scorbunny line).
I think the unraveling the mystery with Sonia was fun, and I like how they made it essentially impossible that you get lost because I get lost way too easily LOL.
But after starting up a Red Version game on my 3DS (so glad I bought it on there!), I realize how different the two games feel.
The first glaring difference is the battles in Gen1 are actually exciting. There are lots of battles that I'm like "Yes, yes yes!!!" or "Noooooo!!!!" and they genuinely make me smile. I'm in Celudon and I couldn't tell you the amount of times I've won battles with 1 Pokemon left on 1HP and paralyzed--- it seems to always be neck-and-neck. THIS FEELING NEVER CAME ONCE IN SWSH. Although I like that SwSh is super easy, it's more akin to watching someone else's Let's Play because the game just plays the mainline story itself, for better or worse.
Another thing is the way new Pokemon are presented. RBG basically give you 2 or 3 at a time, and sometimes add 1 new one. So, for example, when you first see a Jigglypuff in the patch of grass before Mt. Moon or an Oddish on the way to Bill's house it's really refreshing feeling and fun. Whereas in SwSh, there seems to be limitless Pokemon all around and so I don't really notice "new ones," although it does give a realistic, open-world effect.
And I have to mention one more thing........ the sprites in Red Version (personally I'm playing the Japanese one) are AMAZING. Literally every new Pokemon gives me a visceral reaction like "HA!" or "aww" or "WTF?" in a way that I never really felt in SwSh. The SwSh designs I more just felt "yeah I like this one" or "I don't like this one."
Anyway the first games were always comparable to the later ones (DP, BW.... even XY) but the newest Pokémon games, I'd say have strayed so far from Gen1 that it's basically a completely different game, albeit a game that I like.
