I promised bobandbill that I'd post something here, and I do like to keep my promises. I'm a lousy poet. The only rule I ever make for myself is no edits, no revisions ~ just one stream and to be happy with it. I haven't written in a while, but this is probably one of the ones I was most happy with. I'm no longer with the person I wrote it for, sadly, but we had a good time.
Tiny Glitter Butterflies (For K.)
Inside of my heart there's the beat of far away music.
Figures and shapes move slowly in pairs
And beams of light dance, too, piercing the grey haze
Every now and then a beam strikes a glint of color
A heartbeat worth of purple and green and blue and pink.
Tiny Glitter Butterflies dancing to their own beat
I cannot touch them ~ they fly away like a fleeting dream
These brief moments of color in the monochrome
And so I dance, too; alone and colorless.
The beat goes on and so does my life
Sometimes I'll see a spark of color, from the corner of my eye
No longer do I think it's possible to catch it
One day
Things change
There's a new beat
A new song
A new rhythm
On the dance floor of my heart
My heart beats faster, trying to keep up.
And the lights go down.
I feel soft fingers intertwine with mine
In the dark you hold me
You tell me you love me
And the lights come back.
The spotlight upon us, I hold you close and I kiss your lips.
All around us, all over us
There's millions of shards of color
I hold out our linked hands and watch and marvel
As our fingers shimmer in the light.
All the Tiny Glitter Butterflies coloring my heart
