    Totama began as a Pokemon fangame, but we realized that so much of what the game could be was limited by Nintendo, the Pokemon world/lore, and limited engines in older Pokemon games. Deciding to code a game from the ground up, we realized it was time to make a new game altogether FOR the Pokemon Fangame/Fakemon community that wasn't held back by Trademarks and old hardware.

  • Totama: A Pocket Monster RPG inspired by Pokemon, Zelda, and Stardew Valley


    I was inspired by this pixel design on the right to create some pointed thatched roof homes for the Windy Valley area.

    The Windy Valley is a central area of Totama. It is designed to be similar in concept to SWSH's Wild Area as well as Zelda's Hyrule Field. Totama, rare items, and possibly something else will repawn here daily.

    "The Totama you find in the valley may not be impressive now, but if you bond with them, and grow together, they may turn into wondrous and fantastic creatures, depending on where your journey takes you."

    The current plan for the Windy Valley is to make it a 3200x3200px circular area. For reference, Sinnoh Route 224 is about 3000px I long I believe.

    The Windy Valley will serve as a central area that allows you to take your adventure in whatever direction you choose. Completing quests in various regions may give you access to some fast travel options as well.

    The Windy Valley is heavily inspired by Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke, the Nomads from Fire Emblem 7, and nomadic/plains cultures from across the world.

    "Some people say the people of the valley have been on Ukiyo far longer than anyone else. Does that mean we came from somewhere else?"

  • Here is a public version of some battle data for Totama, including the Sign Effectiveness chart.

    The logic with the formulas is to judge how offensive or defensive a certain type is, and currently we are balancing them so that more offensive types are less defensive, and vice versa. Additionally, we are trying to keep the skew less than Pokemon's, so that types don't have to be purely offensive or defensive!

    This doc also includes the equivalent Pokémon type chart, some moves, statuses, hazards, etc. And an in-progress damage calculator that needs to be tweaked. But because the damage calculation formula is there as well, you can also play with that if you would like.

    Feel free to make a copy of this document and make your own edits to play with balancing! Any suggestions from looking over this chart, or from changes you make, are highly highly appreciated!

    EDIT: Added a Totama Signs 2.0 chart with the Yokai Sign, Sound/Light offensive signs, and Aerial/Shade defensive signs. (Shade is currently being worked to resist physical moves, hard to represent in the chart.

  • Small update on the progress over the past few days!

    Totama: A Pocket Monster RPG inspired by Pokemon, Zelda, and Stardew Valley

    Worked out the game scene, UI, and idle sprite at 640x360px resolution with some Windy Valley buildings and some placeholders rocks pulled from Woostar.

    Due to this, the game is being moved down to 480x270 to preserve some of the simplicity/retro pixel feel, as well as ensure the player sprite can be seen well enough. This is a good middle ground so that more of the world will be visible than on other titles like Black 2/White 2 that have a smaller resolution and weren't widescreen.

    - 2 more tracks for the OST through the pipeline
    - 3 more Totama added to the roster! They're visible in the Totama Discord, and they still need names!
    - 3-4 artists currently working on character portraits, character concepts, and new Totama designs
    - Title track is being produced by an experienced game composer!

  • The game is in engine with basic physics!

    Basic movement and animations are done for the player character! There's still kinks, but this is a fun milestone for Totama!

    Collision boxes and layers, menus (inventory, party, settings, etc.), and warps/scenes need to be finished, but after that it is back to making more assets, tilesets, and sprites!

    Being able to control Gray in the overworld feels like such an accomplishment.

    Also, some animations for Appa's sprite have been finished as well!
