ok well this is probably a stupid question but im thinking about getting this game just to update myself because i still do wifi and all that jazz from my diamond. Can you trade from DP-HGSS? if you can then i might pick this up and if you can trade do i have to beat the E4 first or is there anything i need to do because i just want to fly through the game and start battling on wifi

Yes, you can, and there's no limit on when you can trade (besides doing a little bit of playing - certainly in the 1st gym's town at the latest though).
