    I know there is a thread for beginners which is very helpful however yesterday I bought a pack of
    BREAKOUT cards yesterday and was wondering If I started collecting again and possibly playing can you use any card from any pack/deck? or can you only use certain generations/packs/decks in one battle? I know you have a 60 pack to start.
     
    In the current standard format you can use any cards from XY base set onwards to the newest set (though in formal competitions there is a 21 days wait to use them, but small leagues usually allow them), along with promos XY01 to onwards. You can mix them with other sets etc, as making a deck out of only one set is very hard :)
     
    Yeah i just thought the original sets which are years old can be used with newer sets like x and y etc.

    *Some* cards can. If a card has the same name and description as another from an older set you can use the older set one. For example, there was a card called VS Seeker released in Phantom Force, but it was also released in EX Fire Red and Leaf Green sets, so you can use the older set cards

    In Unlimited you can use cards from base set to Fates Collided (there is a banned list though)
