Hey guys, I'm new to these forums so please excuse if Im posting in the wrong area. Basically I'm training a Mightyena running Assurance, as you all probably know it's power is doubled when the opponent is hurt during the same turn it hits, I heard that self inflicted damage counts such as from recoil or a life orb, but does damage from Toxic or confusion power up Assurance? Also what held item do you recommend? Here's the moveset so far

    Ability Quick feet
    Assurance
    Play Rough
    Facade
    Toxic or Swagger

Assurance isn't worth using on Mightyena because of its weak initial base power and the fact that its power-doubling effect is situational. Here's why: Mightyena can rarely live opposing Life Orb-boosted hits and recoil moves, due to its frailty. It can only get off one Assurance at most if this happens. Here's a more efficient way to use Mightyena:
    -Sucker Punch
    -Crunch
    -Play Rough
    -Fire Fang
    Nature: Adamant
    EVs: 252 Atk/4 Def/252 Spe
    Item: Life Orb
    Ability: Moxie

This Mightyena is more efficient because Sucker Punch compensates for Mightyena's average Speed, while Crunch is a more reliable Dark STAB. Play Rough still hits Fighting and Dark Pokemon, while Fire Fang provides coverage for Steels, especially Ferroseed (yes, Ferroseed, Ferrothorn's pre-evolved form, is used in NU).

I see thanks for the advice I will most likely go with this set, but on a last note, what do you think of a suicidal Mightyena trained in Attk, Speed, Def. Holding a Toxic Orb it would get a boost from quick feet and could probably KO a non tank with facade

use swagger and then foul play

Sadly, that's not an option for Mightyena. Ursaring, Swellow and Zangoose are better abusers of Toxic Orb + Facade because they have STAB on Facade, while still having abilities that benefit from being statused (Guts for Ursaring and Swellow; the former also has Quick Feet for Speed, and Toxic Boost for Zangoose).

use swagger and then foul play

Swagger + Foul Play got banned a few months back, so that's out of the question. Even then, it's too luck-based to use.

oh, i see. i did not know u used smogon rules

Mightyena is really unheard of in competitive, so if you get the feeling they're going to ignore you and setup, it does have access to Snatch, worth looking into. Intimidate on it further encourages this, but it's frailty has been mentioned. Sucker Punch will let you ignore a lack of speed investment to go for Attack and any bulk stat, as well as giving it a high base power stab. Play Rough is a good move for coverage though.

Assurance however - sadly yeah, especially in singles (if that's what you're playing) reeeally not worth it. When you don't have a teammate to put that damage on first, assurance can't rely on life orb damage due to frailty, toxic damage since that will always be applied after the turn has ended, or any other status for the same reason. Assurance is most useful in doubles or very rarely in gimmicky or rare singles situations.

Thanks for the feedback guys, no I don't play by smogon rules but I'm looking to build a good record online in Singles. I really want to fit Mightyena in my 6 since it's one of my favorite Pokemon of all gens, but I guess it's only sentimental value it has for me. Again thanks

You're my favorite kind of trainer. Using something because you like it instead of not using it because everyone tells you "it's outclassed" or "not useful in its tier". Are you on Showdown or 3DS? (Sorry if you previously stayed this and I missed it) if you're on 3DS I'll gladly help with breeding and testing any way I can.

Yes I'm on 3ds, it would be really cool if you could, I'm currently going to try an adamant Mightyena maxed in speed and attack, ability Quick feet holding a Toxic Orb, my set up would be Protect to avoid damage and activate quick feet and then hit with Facade ideally, Play Rough for coverage and Crunch for STAB, it's meant to be a reckless Mightyena, hit hard and die, sadly without Foul Play this gen Mightyena doesn't fit another role but I'm ok with that.

That Mightyena variant is outclassed by Ursaring and Zangoose because both have more power behind them and both can afford to play more recklessly, due to Ursaring's better bulk than Mightyena and Zangoose's better Speed.

Mightyena, on the other hand is easily walled for Toxic Orb + Quick Feet.

Sounds like it could be valiant, are you sure you want crunch over sucker punch though? They're the same power, one's just priority assuming they're gonna attack. Erm, well if you're doing toxic orb quick feet I guess crunch is better, sucker punch might've been better on one less focused on speed with attack and a bulk stat, or a focus sash or power boosting item. PM me your FC though, and tomorrow afternoon sometime I'll try and and get a match in with you using some random non-tryhardy pokes. ^^

No problem ^^ I'm on US CTU Time, where the time of this post as I type it is 11:09 PM. I'll probably be on tomorrow around 3 or 4 PM, and the rest of the night after that. Hope that works for you ~ lookin' forward to those test battles ^^

Like I mentioned, Quick Feet Mightyena isn't that good compared to the other status abusers I mentioned simply because it lacks power and coverage. Yes, I can understand that the OP wants to use Mightyena, but the set I posted is the most efficient way to do it.

I gotcha, yeh; that first Mightyena set you posted seems pretty coo'. I was just unsure if you caught on to the fact that he wasn't playing on smogon, going off your suggestion of Fire Fang to cover another pokemon in Mightyena's smogon assigned tier, where he wouldn't be playing in tiers, and the subsequent suggestion of other pokemon instead of Mightyena despite that being completely outside what his request was for. And after he confirmed he wanted to specifically use Mightyena, not just something that best fits its 'role'. :P The set you posted does look pretty effective though, I certainly agree on sucker punch for it, for sure.

Please use the appropriate thread next time (Simple Questions & Answers for specific Pokemon help; Quick Battle Requests if you're looking for a battle.) Now usually, I'd just merge stuff to the appropriate thread. However since the discussion here already spiraled into what would be considered off-topic in both threads, I'm just going to lock this one.

    Locked.
