Transferring saves to updated version

If a ROM hack releases an updated version, is it possible to transfer a save from the old version to the updated version?

    Sometimes.

I'll give an example of my own project. If I make a change that shifts the addresses of certain overworld functions, then loading up an old save on the new patch causes the player to be blocked by invisible walls (corrupted collision data) or the game to crash (jumping to garbage code). I found that the crashes could be avoided by saving in map-00, which for me is the outdoor pallet town map. The invisible walls could be cleared by using the special warp functionality (fly, teleport, etc). Eventually I made it so this kind of thing is detected on load, so the game auto-warps the player to pallet town to sidestep any problems.

Some hacks will also provide a similar "safe area" to save your game before updating to the latest patch.
