Chapter one: Flashback begins
"Wow!" Erick said, as he read the letter. "Wow!"
Erick read the letter again, and again, and again. He was amazed at the news, and he quickly started to scribble down an acceptance letter. God, he would need to train! Erick thought about how far he had come since that first day he started.
Oh, do tell a voice in his head said. Erick found himself slipping into a flashback.
Better get comfy, this is going to be a LONG night… the voice said to anybody who cared to listen. Erick thought back to his very first day…
My eyes opened. I found myself staring into the eyes of my mom, my dad, my brother, and lots of other relations. I got up groggily, and rubbed my eyes. It took me a moment to register that my entire family doesn't normally crowd into my bedroom to see me awake. I stared at there smiling faces, and wandered what I could say.
"Hi everybody…what's going on?" I asked, and I saw everybody trying to restrain a laugh.
"Oh come on, you know!" Mom said, smiling at him. I searched my mind. I remembered that something good was going to start today, but I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was.
"You've lost me", I said in confusion.
"You start you're Pokemon journey today, stupid!" my brother said, slapping the back of my head.
"Oh yeah!" I said, and leaped out of bed.
"We've all come to wish you well!" His sixteen-year-old cousin, Lara, said.
Everybody then in turn came up to me, wished me well, and gave me something. By the end of it, I had two purple spray bottles, apparently called 'potions', eleven Pokeballs, and what seemed like millions of containers of Poke' food, and six hundred dollars of money! I thanked them all, and then they left, except for my younger brother and parents of course. I quickly got dressed into some jeans, a black t-shirt, and a denim jacket. I also grabbed my black hat that looked like a cowboy hat but smaller and black. My friends sometimes teased me about my appearance, but I know that it attracts girls, and it looks slick and cool too me, plus it makes people think I am tougher then I actually am – don't ask me why. I combed my red-streaked black hair. I tilted the hat over my eyes, and then ran out of the bedroom. I slid down the banister backwards, and jumped onto my feet. I caught my brother staring at me in awe. Even thought it hurt me, I remained looking cool. When my brother looked away I opened my mouth in a silent scream of pain. I walked into the kitchen, and I saw my mom and dad looking at me. A full English breakfast was waiting on the table for me. I sat down, and ate it quickly, as I was extremely hungry.
"I'll be seeing you three then" I said, and left. Then, I turned round, opened the door to my house again, and ran in, hugging my parents. They hugged me back. My mom was teary-eyed, and my dad looked upset as well.
"Goodbye son, be good won't you?" Mom said.
"Of course I will!" I said, releasing my grip on them.
"Make us proud son!" My father said, and I assured them that I would. My brother then tapped my shoulder. I turned around and I saw he had his fist out.
"Safe?" He said. I pushed my fist against his.
"Safe" I said, and hugged him. Then, I went to the door, and waved goodbye to them one last time, then made my way to the Pokemon reserve. It was like a lab, but bigger, with many people studying Pokemon there. Once a year, they let trainers have a Pokemon from the lab. I was excited, as I would get to meet Professor Duos, a world renowned Professor that has set up a branch of Poke-reserves all over the region of Revatican.
I walked on the gravely path, staring into the blue sky, and thinking about what my journey would be like. I passed by the Poke mart, before arriving at the huge reserve. I walked inside, and saw many scientists and Pokemon. A woman came up to me.
"Excuse me, but visiting hours open up at nine, and it's only eight thirty!"
"I'm a trainer, here to pick up a starter", Erick said, and the woman showed him a part of the reserve, that was for trainers. He walked inside, and saw four trainers. I would describe them, but they aren't really part of the tale, and it would only bore you. And anyway, it was at that moment I saw the man himself. Professor Duos was standing there! He had a white lab coat on, and he had spiked blue hair and a smiling face.
"Hello! You must be Erick!" Dr Duos said. Oh my god, I thought, he knows my name! My sweaty hand shook his outstretched hand.
"How do you know my name?" I asked, still staring at him.
"Oh, you're family told me about you. They told me that I'm you're hero! It's great too have fans!" He said. "Since you're such a fan, I sneaked a special device in for you!" He whispered, and handed me a Pokedex. Accept it wasn't just any Pokedex. I had heard of these, they were the latest invention – extremely upmarket stuff. It doubled as Poke gear and a Pokedex, and its Pokedex was absolutely crammed with the latest information, and since it had a satellite it could be updated frequently. These were only given to rich children, as they cost thousands of dollars.
"You got this for me?" I asked.
"Well, you're parents were prepared to pay the full price of $12,000, but I told them not to, and I said that since you were such a fan, I'd only ask for a contribution of $100. They were quite thrilled, and wala, you have the FreDex, my latest invention"
I stared at it in awe. It was a silver Pokedex, with the words 'FreDex' inscribed on it.
"Oh thank you!" I said, and I had to restrain myself from hugging the professor.
"Oh, it's quite alright. Now you better pick a Pokemon, and if I were you I wouldn't pick the Lar…" The professor was cut short though, as I had already wandered off to look at Pokemon. I stuffed the FreDex into his pocket, enjoying its metallic feel when I held it. I passed by a Rattata, a mouse Pokemon with a purple back. I dismissed it. I saw a Weedle, and dismissed that too. I saw a Snubble, and at first was attracted. A Snubble was quite a desirable starter. I kept that in mind, and then went too check the others. I saw a small pool, and it seemed that a Teddiursa had fell in it, since it was struggling to get out. I lifted the wet Pokemon out, and put it on the floor. It quickly ran away, as it must have been shy. I saw a Slugma, and I kneeled down to get a closer look at it. Then, it disappeared in a blur. I wandered where it had gone, then suddenly I felt something breathing on my neck. I turned around, and saw that the Slugma was there! That was one quick snail! I got up, and then saw somebody on the windowsill, staring out the window.
"What's up little guy?" I asked, and approached it. Then I realised it was a rare Larvitar! I immediately walked over to it, and touched it. Its body was smooth. In one quick movement, it turned around, and clamped its jaws on my hand! I screamed in pain, attracting the attention of everybody in the centre. I waved my hand around, but the sharp jaws of the Larvitar still held tight. Everybody didn't know what to do, and I was still screaming like a lunatic. The Teddiursa that I had rescued earlier jumped too my rescue. He hopped on the radiator, then onto the windowsill, then onto the back of Larvitar. Teddiursa then slashed Larvitar ten or twelve times, and there were red scratches on Larvitar's back. Larvitar let go of me and turned to see the perpetrator, it's eyes flicking from side to side, and then it spotted Teddiursa. It leaped in the air, but was caught by Professor Duos. The Larvitar was about to bite his arm, when he seemed to pinch Larvitar's back. The Larvitar immediately fell asleep.
"He'll be sleeping for a couple of hours", Dr Duos said, and everybody in the room clapped. I then noticed a girl scoop up Teddiursa in her arms, and hugged her tightly. She walked over to Professor Duos, holding the Teddiursa. Then I realised that she was taking Teddiursa as a starter. My heart sunk, and I nearly cried. I had my heart set on that Teddiursa. Then I remembered the burning pain in my arm. I looked down. I gasped in horror. Blood was everywhere, and skin was hanging off me!
"Erick!" Dr Duos said, holding a bandage. He came over, and put a dressing all over the wound. I felt better after that.
"I'm so sorry – you won't sue will you?" Dr Duos asked.
"Of course not, it was mainly my fault anyway", I said.
"Well, I have a lot of work to do. I'll be seeing you!" Dr Duos said, before turning too leave. But, out of curiosity he turned round to see what Pokemon I would pick. There was the now sleeping Rattata, the Weedle, the hyper Slugma, and the Larvitar. I thought Rattata and Weedle were boring, and
A snail that moved quicker then me wasn't right. And the Larvitar was a definite 'no', for obvious reasons. But then, I noticed another. Something that was in the shadows - hiding away. I walked over, and a sad Ponyta emerged into the light. It was a white horse, with fire instead of a mane. Ponyta looked extremely upset.
"What's wrong with this Ponyta, Dr Duos?" Erick asked, and Dr Duos came forward.
"Well it has…" The professor seemed uncomfortable. "It has Kreaturkrankheit"
"What's that?" I asked.
"Check the FreDex" Professor Duos said.
I got my Pokedex out, and opened it. I saw a large screen, with a dial.
"How do I work this thing?" I asked.
"It's voice activated" The professor explained. "On" he said, and the screen turned on.
" What would you like to do? " It asked, and it went through a list of options.
"Search" I said, and a screen came up.
"Kreaturkrankheit search" I said, and three results came out. One was Germany, that had 3000,0000 topics in that. There was also Kreaturkrankheit, with one result.
"Result one," I said, and up it came.
" Kreaturkrankheit was originally founded in Germany, by professor Raffiniert, now dead. It is an extremely rare condition that effects certain Pokemon differently. Effects are as follows:
Other Pokemon being extremely anti-social to them.
Said Pokemon being shy.
Said Pokemon not being able to control his/her powers.
Said Pokemon unable to grip the concept of emotion of other Pokemon and humans.
Said Pokemon having spastic fits.
Although this is an extremely rare condition, a cure is available, but it is only available by using an extremely rare fruit, thus the price is $ 100, 000, 000.
SPECIAL NEWS UPDATE!
One week ago, the newly established Team ?bel is said too being injecting Pokemon with this rare condition, before releasing them back into the wild. Although Team ?bel has never been heard of before, they are considered especially dangerous. A great reward is offered if anybody can find them. End of search result.
I gasped. The condition itself was terrible, but people actually giving Pokemon it? I looked into Ponyta's eyes. They seemed so lifeless. Then I noticed all the other Pokemon. The weedle's tip of its tail was glowing red, signifying a poison sting attack. The Larvitar was growling. The Slugma was glaring hard. The Rattata was baring its teeth. The Ponyta stepped back into the shadows. Erick saw that the Ponyta didn't understand why the Pokemon didn't like it, since it couldn't grip emotion. It must be so sad. Dr Duos put his hand on my shoulder.
"Just…just give me a minute", I said, running out the lab, tears streaming down my face. I ran outside, feeling the sun hit my face, and ran round the back of the building, and kneeled down. I went through my mind, and then realised what I had to do. That Ponyta needed me… it was time he took a stand. For once in my life, I was going to make a change. I wiped away my tears, tilted my hat back to its original position, and then went back into the building.
"Professor Duos?" I said, seeing Professor Duos tending to a Rattata.
"Oh, Erick. I'm so sorry that you had to learn this at such a young age…"
"It's OK. I've decided that I'm going to take Ponyta", I said bravely.
"You shouldn't. Even masters trainers have some problems controlling Pokemon like this, because Ponyta will never grow attached to you. Even having that Larvitar would be easier, because with time it would become attached to you. But this Pokemon wont, even though it may follow orders, it will be painful to watch it. I've had trouble trying to raise it to be like the others. It's so lifeless…like a robot…and there is also the problem of it not being able to control its powers very well. It'd be easier if it would be a water or grass type, but fire is one of the types that are hard to control, as well as physic and dark. Are you sure you want to take Ponyta?"
I thought about it all. Should I?
"Yes, I'll take it. I'll take the Ponyta!" I said.
"Ok then" Professor Duos said, and went to the dark corner of the room, and then led Ponyta out. I stared deep into its eyes. It's soulless eyes. The Ponyta looked at me, lifelessly. It just stared at me. I let out a moan. I stared into its eyes. I couldn't take it anymore…I couldn't…. Then the Ponyta disappeared in a flash of red light. Professor Duos threw Ponyta's Pokeball into my hand. I muttered a thank you to God, then left, putting the Pokeball in my pocket.
"Good luck Erick, you're very brave. I suggest you catch another Pokemon as soon as you can!" Professor Duos advised, as I left the building. As I left, I couldn't help but wander, could I do it?
