UCLA Student tasered...

...for not having his I.D. card. Watching this video, I think it's really foolish that they're telling him to get up after the kid's just been tased. I'm surprised he didn't pass-out. He was dragged out in the end; he probably lost control of his legs. Tasers are more dangerous than anyone thinks. If the kid was causing as much trouble as the police say he was, I don't see what would have been so difficult about taking him out in handcuffs, resorting to a taser was really uncalled for.

    Video.
UCPD officers shot a student several times with a Taser inside the Powell Library CLICC computer lab late Tuesday night before taking him into custody.

No university police officers were available to comment further about the incident as of 3 a.m. Wednesday, and no Community Service Officers who were on duty at the time could be reached.

At around 11:30 p.m., CSOs asked a male student using a computer in the back of the room to leave when he was unable to produce a BruinCard during a random check. The student did not exit the building immediately.

The CSOs left, returning minutes later, and police officers arrived to escort the student out. By this time the student had begun to walk toward the door with his backpack when an officer approached him and grabbed his arm, at which point the student told the officer to let him go. A second officer then approached the student as well.

The student began to yell "get off me," repeating himself several times.

It was at this point that the officers shot the student with a Taser for the first time, causing him to fall to the floor and cry out in pain. The student also told the officers he had a medical condition.

UCPD officers confirmed that the man involved in the incident was a student, but did not give a name or any additional information about his identity.

As the student was screaming, UCPD officers repeatedly told him to stand up and said "stop fighting us." The student did not stand up as the officers requested and they shot him with the Taser at least once more.

"It was the most disgusting and vile act I had ever seen in my life," said David Remesnitsky, a 2006 UCLA alumnus who witnessed the incident.

As the student and the officers were struggling, bystanders repeatedly asked the police officers to stop, and at one point officers told the gathered crowd to stand back and threatened to use a Taser on anyone who got too close.

Laila Gordy, a fourth-year economics student who was present in the library during the incident, said police officers threatened to shoot her with a Taser when she asked an officer for his name and his badge number.

Gordy was visibly upset by the incident and said other students were also disturbed.

"It's a shock that something like this can happen at UCLA," she said. "It was unnecessary what they did."

Immediately after the incident, several students began to contact local news outlets, informing them of the incident, and Remesnitsky wrote an e-mail to Interim Chancellor Norman Abrams.

  • I don't get it if the student was about too leave what was the point of the officer grabbing him? And then shooting him with a taser and after asking to get up? What the heck! These cops have something wrong in their heads, no more donuts for them!

It's cause they are wannabe cops - police academy drop outs.

These kind of people only take these kind of jobs jsut so they can bully someone around, make themselves feel big.

This incident is bloody shocking (no pun intended).

  • I hate to play devil's advocate here (especially since I also believe they went way too far), but in order for the REAL cops to get called out, the campus cops have to try first. If that doesn't work, then they call the big guys. This kid must have done something to thwart the campus cops. Either that or they got bypassed altogether.

And I don't know about you guys, but if I had a medical condition, I wouldn't risk getting tased and triggering it by resisting. :/ I'd go to the station and talk about it. Plus, for someone with that kind of condition, he sure seemed to have a lot of capacity for speech, talking about the patriot act, and how he was reading, and how they were abusing their power. It might have all been true, but I don't think the part about his "condition" is.

From what I've read, it all happened after 11 PM, which is when anyone without a campus ID is asked to leave. He was asked a good number of times by the CSOs to leave before they called the actual police in. Once the police came in, he started to leave. This is where I believe that the police overstepped their boundaries, he was telling them not to grab him and they consider that to be "hostile force" - enough to use a taser. I don't consider that to be hostile in any way, I sure as hell wouldn't want anyone grabbing me after I was already doing what was asked of me. I do think that the kid was at fault for most of it though, telling the police to F-off probably wasn't the smartest idea. I don't agree with any of what he did, though I'd probably be yelling like that too in his situation, but the police certainly went too far in the way they handled the situation. Would it have been that hard to handcuff the guy?

  • If he had cooperated just a tad bit and watched his language, I think the offense would've been less severe; however, tasered for the sake of merely requesting for the lack of physical contact is a bit extreme..like Blue said, handcuffs wouldn't have been too difficult. o_o; I still hear his screams echoing in my head, now..

how ridiculous has our world become!?

Yet another example of our increasing ridiculous, politically correct, "you either support the agenda (of taking away civil liberties) or you're a terrorist", globalist society in action... This certainly won't be the last occurence either.

Asking the suspect to get up after being tasered is just plain stupid-no question about it.
