Question: Uncreative Title for a Creative Question

I suppose not, but if you're clearly just bumping a dead thread and not bringing anything useful to the discussion with your new post, we'd probably frown upon it.

You seem to be aware of what bumping is. Going by the definition "reposting in a thread to keep it alive" gives you the answer.
Whever that point is valid or not can be left to your discretion, of course.

Yes, but I am just stating, I do not see a point in even having a delete function for members, as there is an edit button, or a moderator for a reason.

This is something I commonly do on my battle threads in the WiFi forum. I delete a post that got no reply so I can make another. Isn't this better than double-posting and/or making a new battle thread?

Or is this frowned upon as well? o.o

That is the whole bumping up a thread thing, so yes, that is "frowned upon."

But I think it's less of a problem in the WiFi area. For one thing, posts don't count anyway. And for another, most battle threads there are meant for real time, meaning that people have to be present on the forum simultaneously. This is pretty much the only forum where this is the case, as in places like Other Chat, or right here in Questions and Feedback, you do not have to be online at the time that someone answers your question.

However, when I go to the WiFi forum, for instance, I'm only inclined to post in those battle threads whose starters' are actually online and ready to battle. Do you get what I'm saying?

I can understand bumping being unneeded in one of the slower forums, and personally don't look well upon it when it happens in those; but in places like the wi-fi forums, new threads are quickly buried, and sometimes the only way for a thread to get anywhere is to bump it. It's either that, or keep posting the same thread over, and over, and over again...

And then there are some of the creative forums, like the art and pixel forums (which I'll use as examples only because I'm familiar with them the most). Not everybody's thread is replied to, but what if a person wants to show off more work before they ever get a reply? They could edit their new stuff in, and have their thread still be overlooked, since no one would know new stuff was added; they could double-post, or they could delete their previous post and just repost what they had (plus the new stuff).

It doesn't apply to everywhere on the forum, obviously, but there are some times when bumping a thread is perfectly justified and not just a bid for attention.

Sylphiel has a point. I think it's best left up to the staff to decide if a member's bumping of a thread is necessary. If it isn't then they can always lock the thread. Such as is a moderator's job, and the mods of each forum/subforum have different ideals about when it's acceptable to bump a thread in their 'kingdom' so to speak.

The best rule of thumb is the one Sylphiel mentioned in her post, and that's to avoid that kind of bumping outside of the Wifi and Creative forums. Even when using it in those two areas. Excercise common sense, and ask yourself if you really are bumping it because it'd be ignored otherwise. (either because editing your post doesnt notify anyone or because the forum is so fast paced, that threads get buried in the chaos)

Generally, as a rule of thumb, I dont even bother reporting things like that, simply because the policy is a bit fuzzy. And if you do feel that the post is indeed in error, sometimes it's best just to bring it up to the moderator(s) of that forum quietly, as they'll be the ones the upper staff will defer to when handling these decisions if they too are feeling unsure of how the mod would handle it. (unless that staff member once was a moderator of that particular forum, they will almost ALWAYS ask the mod, or a former mod of that forum currently ranked as a upper staff member)

I think the moderators and staff appreciate it more when you work with them one on one like that with issues you think are close to breaking the rules. And it does help you understand the rules a little better when you do it too, because you begin to see where they enforce strictly and where they cut slack.

If I post something, then realise it's off-topic or spam or that the question was already answered or that it makes little sense or whatever, it saves me having to bug a moderator and possibly have to cough up a half-decent reason which I often lack; and in not doing that, the moderator's time is freed so he/she can do his/her job.
