[Script] Using special characters in dialog text

Hi, I'm sure this has been asked and answered countless times before, but I can't seem to find the right search terms to find what I'm looking for, so sorry about that in advance.

How can I insert special characters like an Asterisk (*) into my script dialog (I use AdvanceMap & XSE).

Also, how can I insert Directional Arrows? This is specifically for signs at Town Entrances. For example, there might be a sign that says

    "CYAN CITY\nROUTE 01 →"

I would prefer not to use dashes and inequality symbols since the unicode → looks way better than -->

I've tried \* but that doesn't insert an asterisk either. Any help would be appreciated.

The reason why you can't use special characters like an asterisk is because they don't exist in the ROM and so XSE doesn't support them. When you type them into a script, XSE reads them, sees that they don't line up with its recognised characters and doesn't do anything with them. Unfortunately there aren't any in-depth tutorials about character editing, but I did answer a similar question about half a year ago that does go over the basics of how to add a new character to the ROM and how to use it in a script.

There are actually directional arrows already in FR. Use , [D], [L] and [R] in a text string in XSE and they will display as arrows in-game.
