Using the pokedex?

Does anyone (you) use the pokedex (online - not in game pokedex) while battling others - or do you consider it cheating?

It depends on what kind of PokéDex it is, really. If it's a strategy dex, like what Smogon has, then it'll likely give us some clues as to how our opponents will play their Pokémon, and that does give us an advantage. Some would indeed consider it cheating. If it's a regular one, however, such as those in sites like Serebii, there probably wouldn't be any issue, since we're only viewing things like stats and move-pools.

When I battle competitively I look up Pokemon in Smogon's Pokedex that I am unfamiliar with, because chances are they are already running a common set and I can somewhat predict what function they are supposed to perform. I don't think that is cheating. I also don't think that looking up Pokemon in any sort of PokeDex while battling is cheating. This is because often times, you might just forget what ability or type or move some Pokemon has - at the size Pokemon is now, it's pretty hard to memorize everything so it's nice to have an online resource to know everything for you.
