I am planning on buying US or UM this year, sometime after the summer. I was just wondering if it is worth the buy. How different is it from the original games? Please don't spoil anything! Thanks in advance.
(P.S- Which version should I get? I got Sun last time. Does it really make a dif?)

The events of the first 3 islands are nearly identical to how it is in Sun/Moon. It's not until you get to Poni that there starts to be any real differences.

Throws in a few new features early on like the Photo Club and Mantine Surfing, has something of an actual postgame.

oh, okay. Still, its a little disappointing considering the first three islands contain the bulk of the adventure.
BTW, has the competitive scene changed, or do people still use the same Pokemon?

It's (the singles meta anyway) still pretty much the same as late-SM meta, just with the occasional Stakataka or Blacephalon thrown in now. Might see the occasional Defog Landorus-T/Koko or Gunk Shot Ash-Greninja.

Significant changes to the metagame usually only happen when we get a new generation and not just a new game, for better or worse.

Erm...It's an improvement over SUMO...It has a good size post game.Containing all the legendary Pokémon is amazing!Like others said the first 3 islands are nearly identical with hints to necrozma I'm not trying to spoil it for you but I'm sure you already know the importance of Necrozma. So the decision is really up to you.

Story-wise, as everyone else said, it's still pretty much the same, except for some changes in Totem Pokémon battles and some characters that, IMHO, were rewritten for the better.

Gameplay-wise, there are a couple of nice differences here and there: more Pokémon to find (400 instead of 300) , more move tutors, fun little mini-games (with all previous gen Legendaries available to get in one of them) , ability to purchase previously event-exclusive Mega Stones and Z-Crystals...

I'd say: it's worth it, but you don't want to play US/UM immediately after S/M.

As to what version you want to buy since you already have Sun: depends if you want to appreciate all the differences more (in which case you can get Ultra Sun), or if you want a version that contains version exclusives that Sun doesn't have (Ultra-Moon it is then) .

If one doesn't have Sun and Moon? I cannot reccomend it enough, for it is a great time, and I'm sure anyone who missed out on the first run-through is gonna have a blast! I'm loving the story and the characters so far.

But you have the original Sun. And while I never played the originals, there are some who have who feel it isn't worth it. But I also have a friend who thinks it is worth it. So in that case, it's a bit trickier. I can only say it's all up to you.

If one doesn't like updated versions of existing games and has the originals, it's best to hang on to them. If the new stuff is at all interesting to you, you can snag it, but I personally suggest holding off on actually playing it if you played the originals, at least until you feel like revisiting Alola's story. You'll have to go through the parts you already went through to get to most of the new stuff, so you're not gonna have a good time if revisiting the story is something you're just not ready for.

I really don't play for the competitive scene, so that, I can't really say. I would suggest looking to those who know about it for info on that. They'd know better than I do, at least.

So basically, it's all down to you. To people like me without the originals, this is a fantastic game that deserves to be played, so I can't reccomend it enough, but to someone like you who does, I don't wanna say "don't get it," but it's up to you if the changes and addtions are worth the additional $40.

There's a mini-game that unlocks towards the end of the main adventure. I won't spoil what it is exactly, because it's tied to the story, but basically every time you play it, you end up encountering either a regular Pokémon that is not in the Alola Dex, a shiny Pokémon or a Legendary from previous generations, depending on how well you fare.

Almost all of them are there, though like in ORAS, some are version-exclusive, and some require two members of the trio in your team to catch the third one. There are several factors that determine what you encounter at the end of the mini-game, but they are all related to how well you fare (and in some special cases, what other Legendaries you have on your team, as stated above), and you don't need to have a level 100/fully EV-trained/happy Pokémon on your team, or play on a particular day/hour/minute.

The only two Legendary Pokémon from previous gens that don't show up in this mini-game are Zygarde (it's catchable elsewhere, and thankfully in a much less tedious manner than in SuMo) and Deoxys (after being catchable in ORAS, it apparently became Mythical again) .

Obviously, Mythical Pokémon can't be caught using this mini-game.
