Hello everyone, this is my 1st post. I become nostalgic and missed my 1st gen cards, which idk how they disappeared and now I want to collect some Pokemon Cards. I want to limit myself to just one deck (or series..not sure how to say this).

I saw the XY cards, but I'm not a fan of the style, as I prefer the simple style from the 1st generation. I saw the Pokemon Black and White cards, but I'm not sure if those are still for sale and I'm a bit confused with the expansions.

If someone could update me on all of this, I would appreciate it :)

Attached pic of what I mean by simple style

If you don't like the half art cards then I'd stay away from Primal Clash, Roaring Skies and Ancient Origins. Those are the only sets with the half art cards.
I believe starting with XY every Gen 1 Pokémon has received a card now aside from Kadabra.

Starting with Dark Explorers, every set released usually has ex cards and full art cards. Personally as someone who's bought cards in 90's, I love the full art cards, they are what got me into collecting the cards again.

The following sets are pretty easy to find in stores right now, Plasma Storm, Plasma Freeze, Next Destinies, Furious Fists, Phantom Forces, Primal Clash, Roaring Skies and Ancient Origins.
These sets feature full arts of Gardevoir, Deoxys, Kyogre, Groudon, Articuno, Dragonite, Gengar, Ampharos and Machamp. As well as full arts of Primal Kyorge, Primal Groudon, Mega Gardevoir, Mega Ampharos and Mega Latios.

These sets are not as easy to find, Dark Explorers, Boundaries Crossed, Plasma Blast, Legendary Treasures, XY and Flashfire.
These sets feature full arts of Darkrai, Genesect, Landorus, Celebi, Charizard, Yveltal, Xerneas, Blastoise, Venusaur and Kangaskhan.

If you're interested in value then right now the sets to collect are Plasma Freeze(Secret rare Ultra Ball is worth 100 dollars right now), Plasma Storm(Secret Rare Charizard's are going for 60), Roaring Skies (Shaymin ex's are going for about 40 and full arts for 50), Flashfire (Secret rare mega Charizards going for 40 each).

But really it depends on what Pokémon you want in card form, if it's just gen 1 then no set has every gen 1 pokemon unfortunately, each set usually has 4-5 gen 1 evolution lines, however if a Pokémon has an ex then previous evolutions are not in that set.

Just want to collect for personal collection. Don't really like buying just to get high value rares.

I'll have to look at all those easy to find sets to see which one I like best. Thanks for the info.

Also, what store is best to buy these from? I only know about Toys R Us

Edit: Checked out the easier to find sets and prefer the ones from Black and White because (correct me if I'm wrong, they seem to have more of the "simple art" style). Anyway, if you could pick a set to collect (from the easy to find), which one would it be and why?

I'm not sure what you mean by a simple art style? Do you mean the artists? the ancient trait cards? the break cards?

Personally I don't have a favorite set in terms of artwork on cards, I don't really mind the atc's. I hate the break cards though. I actually stopped collecting the cards around the e-series because I preferred the base set design of the card. I think the cards are more like this now then ever before, starting with Black and White base set until now.
Of the Black and White sets I listed I guess I'd say Plasma Freeze since each card has a theme, with ice being featured. Though there are blue bordered cards in the Plasma sets, which are like trolls in the tcg. Next Destinies doesn't have blue borders though and it was recently reprinted.

In terms of stores, Toys R Us is usually overpriced on Pokémon cards, single packs are usually 4.99 there, they are usually 4.19 at Target. Most of their other products that contain more then 1 pack are 5-10 more dollars then Target or Walmart.

Just for reference, at any given time, only the last 4 sets released are officially in print by The Pokemon Company. As of present, the last 4 sets are XY sets (actually, I think the last 8 are), so Black & White series sets will be a little difficult to find, especially since the first of those is already 4 years old.

Of sets released within the past 5-7 years, though, my personal favorite are the HeartGold SoulSilver sets because of the style of the cards. Those aren't easy to find these days, though.

For stores, what country are you in?

The art that was in the 1st gen cards (top squared pic and no full art or pokemon almost jumping out of the card). Good to know for Toys R Us. I'll check out target.com since there are no Target here

Puerto Rico, so no Target :(

The HeartGold Soul Silver looks awesome, but I see that they are hard to find. I prefer Black and White over XY series, but I don't want to risk having incomplete collection or having to pay alot more to complete it. I'll have to check out which XY set I like best.

    Thanks :)
