I'm just really lucky my BIGGEST LIBRARY NETWORK IN NORTH AMERICA library has all the Kenshin DVDs. And that Manga Entertainment has uploaded almost all of the episodes to their YouTube accounts. :U

How many layers? One or two. Second one is saturation with a pinkish color. /not even kidding.

Oh I do. You just said 'layer modes' in which the first layer is "normal" and the second layer is "saturate". ;D But you should find your own way to enhance your icons!

...But I do that best through tutorials ;; Besides, Multiply @ 50% opacity and Screen @ 50% opacity is too simple. I might add in the occasional cooling or warming filter, but...

This was duplicated with the layer above the next at Multiply 50% with another duplicated layer on top of that at Screen 50%.

This is what was made in GIMP plus some pink layer at Saturate 50%.
